I just found this thread and loved every page of it. Thank you! I do have one question though, you said in your first post you have grown out of favor with barrel bands. I am planning on doing one and wondered if this was just a personal change in your tastes, or if there was a technical reason for it?

I am planning on doing one and wondered if this was just a personal change in your tastes, or if there was a technical reason for it? There's no technical reason. In fact, the band helps support the ejector housing. I just prefer the look of a straight barrel. To my eyes, it appears more balanced that way. Glad you liked the thread. I have another 5-shot build coming soon. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Actually, it will be going on a 1937 S&W, to make it look like Indiana Jones' gun in Raiders of the Lost Ark. I loved that gun ever since I first saw it!

Lee thank you for this build and the superbly detailed thread! It has been my dream to have/shoot such a precisely made (and beautiful ) single, to hunt and shoot with. One that is mild to shoot lots and able to hunt critters up to white tails. And I find it a shame that Ruger has such a hard time making a production version that at least LOOKS like (close) to yours here - smooth cylinder, 6 to 6.5” barrel, Bisley grip, stainless polished just a little beyond industrial, etc. Thanks for keeping my dream going, maybe it’s time to think of financing!

I truly envy your skills AND your shop! I really do need to learn precision machining skills. I'm a millwright by trade, but my machining precision is nowhere near yours.

Quick update on how I’m progressing. I spoke with Jack and the gripframe is on its way to Nevada. He’ll reshape the Bisley and wrap it in high figure walnut. Then I had to dig up barrel. Searching the shop uncovered some from my .50 Alaskan BFR build. With Pac Nor backlogged six months, I’m glad I had a piece. Stainless 0.510”, 1:18 twist, unturned @ 1.10” o.d. I only need six-inches. We’ll get another conversion out of this length. Opening the frame requires a 3/16” carbide cutter. And it has to be a long endmill to clear the window. We'll perform this step over the weekend. I also decided on a new .500 Linebaugh bullet; one I’ve wanted for some time. Using Mountain Molds software, I designed a 505 gr LFN on dual cavity blocks. I chose plain base because it’ll top out around 1,200 fps. The specs if anyone is interested in ordering the same: I believe it’ll print better at 100 yards than the 525 WFN I’ve been shooting. I’ve spread the CoF and CoG more, lengthened the nose, upped the driving band height, and reduced the meplat. Casting a lighter 440 WFN from my LBT mold is another option for short range. But in multiple guns, it hasn’t done well past 50 yards. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time" I've often thought that a bullet of 480 to 490 grains would be a better option than the 525 grain that we were using. A bullet that didn't protrude into the case as much would allow for enough powder to run around 1200 FPS in a 6" I think. I don't truly see the need for a bullet at 525 grains I think you will like this bullet

John - the 505 went 1,200 fps on the nose with H110. Shot tight at 100 yards too: 5-shots, 100 yards bench rested Martin conversion - .500 Linebaugh Bullet - 505 gr Martin LFN Powder – 26.0 H110 Brass - Starline Primer - CCI 350 Velocity – 1,210 fps Hold – front blade touching the top of the plate. Sighted 3” high at 50 yards -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I wasn't too far off on my thinking, this is a better bullet for the 500 Linebaugh no doubt

Excellent build thread. Everything you did was incredibly well documented. You are very lucky to have a teacher like your father, he has obviously taught you well. Precision machinists that put accuracy above everything else are pretty rare these days. The finished product looks amazing.

Not having played with anything larger than the 45's, I find the efficiency of the large case surprising. 1200 fps on 26 grains of H110. With the large amount of bullet inside the case it makes sense, but still 1200 fps from jist 26 grains is impressive.

That was well done, informative, great pictures. Funny thing - after 30 some years as a tool & die maker, I could smell what was on the screen. Especially the honing operation ----
