Night hawk is selling Korths too I think.
Sort of a bargain model. But almost affordable

I sent them an email yesterday to ask if they would add a beaver tail to my Hi Power, stipple the front and back strap and refinish. They were quick to respond. In short they will give their full Hi Power treatment to a customer supplied pistol but no a la carte work. So I could get a beaver tail from them for $2,495.00, along with the rest of the package, which I have no interest in. Looks like my only option at this point is Cylinder & Slide. They do piece work.

Had to figure their business model but I guess it works... I've played with a couple of their 1911s and just traded for one. They make nice stuff but price wise they are in the range of my top drawer target guns. While I can see it for a target gun I'd be hard pressed to spend more than the cost of a Springfield Compact Range Officer for a new carry 1911. Reeder makes some 10mm long slide guns that look good..

....for a grand one can buy the new Remington Long Slide Hunter and have $3K left for ammo and a couple of hog hunts...
Have handled several NHs and talked to their reps at the SHOT Show. Nicely made guns.
Guess one could look at them the same way some look at Freedm Arms vs. a Ruger. One can buy 3-4 Rugers for the same price as one FAs...yet FAs is a year and a half backlogged....

Champagne tastes with a beer budget! The taste is different but the results are the same! Once you reach the point of good stuff everything else is gun budget and personal tastes.

There's a 10mm Rock Island for sale on a local forum pretty cheap. I just don't need another caliber to reload.

When you see a custom 1911 like a Nighthawk, Cabot, Wilson, Republic Forge next to a production gun Then you can appreciate the vast difference in quality. I used to think what's the big deal, it's a 1911. Until I put a $5,800.00 Republic Forge next to a Springfield. The difference in fit, finish and all the small machined bits and pieces almost make them two different pistols. Now whether that difference is worth $5,000.00 is totally up to the buyer and his wallet. I can say that I'm not a player on those high end pieces but if money wasn't an object I would own as many custom 1911's as I could. I will have a Cabot Custom living at my house in the near future. At $3,400.00 they're a deal! ;-)

Just as with our fancied up single actions those cosmetic touches drive a lot of the price of the top end guns. Fit and finish don't come cheap.. Just like our fancy revolvers we see shooters with deep pockets buy the fancy 1911s as status symbols. FWIW price doesn't necessarily mean the guns will shoot. I've been issued some plain jane looking built 1911 that shot as good as anything out there...

Nope it may not shoot better than SOME plain janes but you're more likely to get an excellent shooter in that price range than you will with a $400.00 Rock Island. These are as much of an investment as they are shooters. Quality will always hold value versus a 50 or 60 a day production line gun. It's usually one real gunsmith per gun hand fitting all those quality pieces and parts versus 10 guys on an assembly line dropping machine tumbled MIM parts. I've got MIM parts guns. The Smith 69 for one and a few Springfield 1911's but so do thousands of other people. Shoot pretty good too. I guess I've finally reached a point that I've read Mr. Taffin preach on several times. My kids are grown, my house and vehicles are paid for so I'm finally in a position with a bit more fun money. Don't get me wrong, that Cabot Custom I want will be on layaway for some time but when I make the payment I know it will stay with me even when that pistol finally comes home. If I pay $1,100 or $1,200.00 for a Springfield TRP as soon as I take it out the door I'll have an $750.00 to $900.00 pistol depending on what the market will bear. Of course this is just my feeling on the subject.

For those of us on a beer budget, (and cheep beer at that) The Armscor 6" Pro Match is not a bad choice. Pro Match 10mm They are allegedly assembled by their gunsmiths in Nevada using hand picked parts. Kinda like Winchesters 1-100 models. I bought mine last year for under a grand. The only changes I made to it were a short trigger, a flat bottom firing pin stop and Wolff springs. Paper plates at 100 yards are no problem even with my old eyes. Jeff |
