Thursday me & one of my son's were headed out of town to a football game when we spotted this herd of elk standing just off the highway trying to decide which way to go to bed down for the night. They were about 150 yds. off the pavement so we stopped & took a photo, had one bull in the herd. His wife has a tag but we didn't have time to go home & get her, it will have to wait. My son's best friend shot this dandy bull moose today, they will pack it out tomorrow on my son's horses. About a 44" bull he told us. Dick

What does moose taste like? Chicken? Great animals and pictures. Here where I am in Florida, in particular where I work (retirement community) the only herds I see are them damn snow bird herds! Sometime I wish there were a hunting season on them.

Now I know where my elk is.....!
My gal has a cow hunt next weekend and we scouted all day yesterday. I'm getting old.
Maybe we'll do better than I did on my bull hunt.
I swear guys look for my truck and then hunt near there.....hunters everywhere...blowing bugles and chasing elk off...newbies...
Nice moose too! Taste like moose.

SHE got the bear that her hubby had been trailing with the dogs. He'd radioed her to get into a place to intercept the bear & she did. A big one for sure.

Moose, when taken at the right time of course is very good, I think better than elk. One thing we learned many years ago, you don't want to shoot one too early in the season, they are big animals & don't fatten up early, you need to get into the season a bit before you pull the trigger. The worst one we ever got was a young bull on opening day, the butcher told us, don't shoot a moose early, & it was for the reason's I mentioned above, he was right. If I had to pin it down I would say the first or second week in Oct. in our country. I'm guessing the one Mark Hampton popped a couple weeks ago would be great.

Just got home from church & my best friend's son in law got a really good bull elk today. This one is a dandy! I've seen an awful lot of deer, seen over 90 head friday night with several bucks but no handgun shots. I've seen one really good buck 3 times but me & him can't get together yet, one day to go. I put the neighbor kid on him 3 days ago, we had him bedded down on a pretty open hill side & I told him how to approach the buck. I stayed on the far side 1/2 mile away to motion him in while he made a big circle & climbed above the buck & 4 doe's. When he got in position the buck was 40 yds & still bedded, he jumped up & he missed him twice with a rifle! We did get him a doe, legal for kids. I could have killed this buck twice if I were rifle hunting, he's a very fine buck, I'll try again tomorrow if he's still in the area. This is all public land hunting by the way. Dick

GREAT pictures as always, Dick... That Elk is a Bruiser! That is a Fine Moose to.. I hope one day to get after one of them. If I could get it done with the short gun I'd be in Heaven! I'd love to do it with my favorite, the 44 Mag. Someday maybe, will keep my fingers and tosies crossed I'm sorry to hear (kinda ) about the young feller missing the buck you two we're after BUT, I hope it happened that way so you could clinch the deal tomorrow That's why I said "kinda" above Best of luck to you buddy. I hope you and Bucky get together tomorrow and you invite him home for supper Ray P.S. Have you found/seen that little trappers/huntin cabin I'm looking for yet? I would pack my Bags/Gear/Toys and be on my way quicker than you can say, Huckleberry Shake Ray

Ray, I totally forgot! Small parcels of land around Soda Springs are almost impossible to find because that's what everyone wants. Not sure what the zoning is but it's probably something like 40 acres unless it's your dad selling/giving you a piece of ground. Once in a great while a small property comes up with a little house or cabin but they are gone before the ink is dry in the paper. Best bet is to check with a local real estate broker & give them your name. Best one I know of is Rikki Woods, she works for (I think) High Country Real Estate, years ago she was one of my basketball players at the middle school. Tyrone, most all of the elk hunts are going on right now, they are taking some really big bulls to the north & east of town. Now north & east can cover a lot of ground but there are a whole lot of elk out there. Plus they just gave out 500 extra cow tags & 500 extra doe tags because of a big fire this summer that burned a lot of critical winter range. The kill rate on those 1000 tags will probably approach 100% Suppose to rain tomorrow so we'll see what happens with that big buck I've been hunting, he's a real dandy, probably pushing 27" wide. His doe's saved him last week. I'll shoot any buck I can tomorrow. PS, the boys just called as I was typing this, they are 1 hour out with the moose, its been 13 hours using 4 head of horses & they are right on the Wyoming border. Couple more nice bucks taken today. First one is a friend's son, his second buck ever, nice deer. The holy grail for a mule deer buck is a 30 incher, this beauty, taken today by a friend of Shane's is a tick over 35 inches!! Dick
