Decided to go and scare up some grouse for dinner. I had walked a couple hundred yards and caught a black shape out of the corner of my eye. I set my 870 down and pulled out my well used 41 mag Blackhawk. It was real thick and I got within thirty yards and was set up and waiting for a gap in the trees. Then I caught movement between it and me. Two cubs. I finally had a clear view and she was big. Probably 300. Now I was in a bit of a quandary ,how do I sneak back out and get my shotgun without alarming her to my presence. Decided to leave my shotgun and ease out a different way. Damn, I was real excited and she was big. I am glad that I realized there were cubs before it got worse. Came back a couple hours later and picked up my shotgun.

Cool story Snyd. It always gets the heart going a few beats quicker when you're close to bears, especially ones with cubs.

I had an episode with a sow with cubs back in the early 80's while backpacking in Penn., that was the deciding factor in my trying to always have a gun onboard. Then on another trip, this time in "The Bob", of Montana, the sow was a grizzly and her cubs were yearlings. Was then quite glad that 4lbs had been added to my gear. Stay safe folks.

The grandson's have had 3 bears in close while bowhunting this year, one at 15 yds & both boys were sitting on stools on the ground. No cubs & they had bear tags but the bear heard someone on a 4 wheeler before they could get an arrow on the string, happened pretty fast, just like my neighbor that got mauled several years back. f3, good job backing out of there, things can go south in a heart beat with cubs involved.

Oh, some yrs back I bought at wal-mart, a cheap shotgun cartridge belt. I cut into 2-3 shell capacity pieces and had my wife sew these piece into the chest pockets of my field/bird hunting shirts. This allows me to have 2-3 Barney Fife loads close to hand. These shell loops get either buck shot or slugs loads, per state regs. A near to hand, more lethal than bird shot load. IF you have the time. A thought.

We're on the same page, stay safe. Many reports from bird hunters of their dogs embroiled in fights with coyotes. Bears not the only threat.
