www.ksl.com/?sid=41054549&nid=148Seems like if I saw a mountain lion out of the corner of my eye and I had little kids afoot I wouldn't be just all business as usual.

Ya, I wrote this up a few days ago. It disappeared so fast the mother wasn't even sure she had seen it. Nothing stalks like a Mountain Lion, they are the ultimate predator & can appear & disappear so fast its incredible. One of my son's actually shot a record book one with his bow one year. He was in his tree stand & the big Tom came in for a drink just before dark, he popped it & it made a huge leap & landed in the center of the pond, then one more leap & landed back on the bank & then was gone in a flash. We found it 10 yds into the timber after dark! Yikes, it was huge, the head was bigger than the shoulders on the one I shot many years ago.

Dick Maybe there is a way to get them kitties to develop a taste for those Utah fisherman that always seem to be bugging you instead of kids.
Years back we had people here in the hilltowns saying that they had seen mountain lions out and about. Encon said nope not around these parts. Then a lady from I think it was Berne, sent in a picture to the local spotlight newspaper showing a big cat in her back yard standing under the bird feeder. Nice long tail showing in the picture so there was no saying it was an overly large bobcat. Far as I know Encon had no comment.

Missouri Dept of Conservation denied over and over the existence of mountain lions and bears in Missouri. I found it odd for an animal to not exist and the extent they went to,to make damn sure everyone knew it was illegal to kill one of the "imaginary animals". Well about 15 years ago a black bear wandered across Missouri Blvd in Jefferson City around noon,i.e. LOTS of witnesses and that kinda put a fly in the ointment. Then 10 years or so ago a relative of a local tv news anchor hit a mountain lion on I-70. Both are seen somewhat regularly now but MDC keeps saying they are travelers just passing thru the state.

Here in Indiana at the Crane NWS they kept saying that there wasn't a mountain lion there. They caught one on a game camera and then release an announcement about it for the up coming deer hunters to take notice and also to tell them not to shoot it.

Guy I know had two young ones run across the street in front of him a few nights ago. Same corner as one of the grade schools. No dog hunting has let them move right into town here in western Oregon.

There was a cougar killed last year no more than a mile from my house here outside Canby. It had been killing livestock for a couple of weeks. It's a rural area, but mainly smaller farms (1-10 acres) and wooded lots--plenty of people out and about as well as livestock and pets.

I saw one a couple years ago, here in Southern MN... I was on my way to work one morning... must have been middle of the summer, or a Friday when I go in an hour - hour & half later, as it was already pretty sunny, but still early enough there was not a lot of traffic... about half way between our place & the small town 3 miles north, there is a power line running east / west... I saw what looked like a deer running full out maybe a half mile east of the road I was on, running down the powerline heading west, towards the state park, about a mile further down the power line... when it crossed the paved road about a 1/4 mile ahead of me, I could see it was lower to the ground, & had a long tail... it was nearly as big as a deer, so a pretty big cat... I play cards with the Park Manager... I told him what I saw, & that it was heading in his direction... he told me, he wouldn't be surprised, but that their "official" position, is that there are none in MN... though they have been caught on various cameras in Minneapolis / St Paul area, along the river in the bluffs

Some time back, I think I figured out the whole denial thing. Here, it was bobcats, then bears. If a game commission admits they have a new species afoot, they have to classify it. Game animal ? Protected ? Nuisance/pest ? Etc.. They then run the risk of spending most of their budget, our taxes, in court battles defending the choice of listing.

On our mule ride yesterday, the ranch owner where we park our rigs said to watch out for a cat. He had another big one in the corner of the property last week waiting for his sheep to be turned out. Fish & Game have hired a guy to come in and take out cougar 3 times in the last 4 years and they just keep moving back in.

KING... long as you mentioned both in the same sentence... we are just starting a sheep flock, & are a little worried about yotes from the drainage ditches about a half mile away... the main pasture I built is very secure ( they would have to jump double fences through my hog runs, ( yotes hate 400 + lb hogs ) & deal with big outside doggie to get to my sheep... but as the flock grows, I'll have to start using less secure, further away pastures... the "mule guys" have been giving MRS grief, that she needs a mule in the pasture to run off the yotes & protect the flock... I have a Mule, but it burns gas, not hay, carries 6 people & has a dump box... you guys think I really need a Mule of the 4 legged variety to put in with my sheep??? & yes I saw the picture of the one shaking the dead cat... to keep this reasonably on track

If I was getting an animal to put in with sheep and did not went to go with an embedded guard dog, I would go with donkey. I think they have an even strong sense of territory and self preservation than a mule and may well mix with the sheep better.

A local guy has a Great Pyranees for his goats. Apparently they everything but eat coyotes. Saw where it caught one once, looked like it had stepped on a land mine. It was literally torn to pieces.

the guy we got ours from, has one in his flock... it bit one potential lamb buyer, when the guy picked up the lamb... don't want anything that "stupid" protective... my outside doggie ( 1/2 German Shepard / 1/2 Husky ) would be great just to put in the pasture... but he chases anything that will run... he's ok in there when we are there, but he'd probably run them to death, if he got in a chasing mood...
BTW... we have "hair sheep" they still get wool, but shed in clumps like my outside doggie... they actually look like goats... but no goat in them
