No blurred line. The guy specifically asked about the advantages/disadvantages of each. When I say "oversized", I mean oversized. Not just longer.

To me the attraction of a five-shot or oversized six-shot .45 would be just to have a very accurate, properly built .45 with an added safety margin. Resurrecting this thread, the above post sums up my feelings about .45's. The posts about going to a bigger cartridge(.475/.500) don't really resonate with me. I already have a Linebaugh built .475L and at my age it is more about pride of ownership than need. I shoot it but not with max loads. Since I almost always shoot alone, I don't have anyone to brag to, not even my wife. She would kill me if she knew how much I had wrapped up in it. I mentioned the Clement gun which is .45 Colt made from a new .44 Mag. stainless Bisley. This gun has very tight chambers and I have to watch that I don't swell the case with a too big bullet. Having said all this, I enjoy reading all the various points of view on the subject. John W.TN

I agree with John. As much as I love the bigger bores, the truth is a standard 44 mag is all the sixgun I need here in S. Texas.

Sometimes what you really need vs. what you think you need are 2 different things. Don't get me wrong I've had plenty oversize and long cylinder guns myself.

if we are truthful about it, the lowly 44 special will suffice for 99.9% of what we need a sixgun for. but just having one gun is so boring. i have a 45 tight chambered cut down max cylinder gun by Gallagher and it will comfortably launch beartooth's long cylinder 350 grainer just a smidge under 1300 fps with 300 mp. i think the tight chamber has more to do with the gains than the long body cylinder, but it looks good filling up the window.

I've bought Kool looking brass and had to build a rifle. No shame whatsoever........... It's what we do. However HOW we do it makes all the difference!! I got a Graziano SAG 12 in storage and a Hardinge mill getting redone. Retire soon and got all the time in the world. Gonna make LOTS-O-Cylinders!!! Favorite one in rifles will be 7.62x39 CZ 527 into a quarter bore on shortened 6.5x54 MS brass. And another in 41 cal on the same brass and action. To slaughter a quote from "Wind in the Willows" "Nothing so nice as messing around building firearms"
