Huntington has built me two revolvers with oversized six-shot cylinders. One is a .44 Mag and the other a .45 Colt. He tells me that you can get pretty close to the maximum five-shot loads with the .45 without worry. That said, I have no desire to turn my .45 Colts into .454 Casulls. Here is the .45 Colt and below it is the .44 Mag.

The thing about the long 6 shot is being able handle longer bullets without all the expense of the custom 5 shot cylinder. I have not had any of my long cylinder guns built to push them into the next level but to allow flexibility on bullet selection. My 5 shot guns still allow the longer bullets but extend the pressure Windows somewhat as well. Still, like many I don't feel the need to 5 shots into the stratosphere, that is what the next step up in caliber us for.

Thing that is important to remember is that Jack put oversized cylinders in the guns mentioned above.
I'm pretty sure those cylinders are longer AND bigger in diameter.Maybe Max will comment further on this detail.
There are many 6 shot conversions dome with the .357 max cylinders to fill the cylinder window that do not have the extra strength the added diameter provides.
Nothing wrong with these builds at all.
FWIW, I recently talked with Mr. Bowen and he said he wouldn't do a 6 shot .45 Colt with the long cylinder due to concerns that someone down the road would try and shoot the heavy 5 shot loads out of it and that was WITH an oversized cylinder....

That is a beautiful Reeder gun. Fit and finish looks excellent. He is building me a gun right now.

The cut-down Maximum cylinder will buy you more space for long bullets, but even the stock length isn't really all that limited. For me the Maximum cylinder is more of an aesthetic improvement over all else as it fills the window nicely.

You're right, That's all it is.
But, if you're going to get a cylinder bored anyway, why not?

How does an oversize 6 shot cost less than a 5 shot? I've got a semi-custom 6 shot .45 Colt but the cylinder is bored out from a .44 Mag. I treat it the same as any other 6 shot Ruger. No loads for the 5 shot guns go in this one. Actually, more of the loads for this one are shot in the 5 shot guns than max 5 shot loads.

Reboring a max cylinder and having it fit is cheaper than having a custom long cylinder made.

The 5 shots only for length and "Load'em UP"...Ouch Buy a bigger bore for the heavey work...IMHO

With 300 to 360 grain bullets the big 5 shot guns get you 150 to 175fps or so more velocity than a standard diameter 6 shot with the same cylinder length. Trajectory and penetration from the 5 shot 45 Colt is nothing to write home about IMHO when compared to standard diameter cylinder. I don't care for recoil past "Ruger only" (32k psi) anyway. This statement parrots what Linebaugh and lots of gun writers that stand on his shoulders have been saying for years, but it's still true. As someone stated above, If you can't get it done with 32k psi loads, then a bigger hammer might be called for.

I don't know what it costs to procure a Maximum cylinder, have shortened, fitted and rechambered but it can't be cheap. Somehow I think I'd rather spend a little more and get an oversized cylinder for the added strength, along with the linebored chambers that go with it. Particularly in the .45Colt, where it starts running out of steam over 330gr at 32,000psi. Having a little extra room to get those 360gr bullets to 1200-1300fps might be preferable. If you 'need' 360's, you 'need' all you can get. If all you're doing is killin' deer and hogs, then obviously a standard six shot is plenty.

Can a re-fit maximum cylinder be line bored?
