After owning and shooting mostly rugers including a gp100, and a redhawk and a few super blackhawks and a BFR , i decided that i should try a smith. Got a great deal on gunbroker and just waiting for the gun to arrive. So what can i expect from the 629. After shooting rugers all my life, will i like the smith? can't wait to try it out.

You should like that gun, I have a version of it, called the Ranger. It was a small run of 629 4" guns. Great shooter. Here is mine.

I really liked my 629-1 but my index finger is too short for double action work. I was going to get some custom grips but sold the gun to fund the purchase of another.

You should like this gun a lot. The 250 gr Keith style pushed with 10 grains of Unique, should be a very nice compliment for this gun. Be patient when learning to master the double action. Once this is done, your shooting will reach a new level. I believe you will like the smooth trigger also. ( VS a serrated one)

I own a few smith's including a rarer model 53 22 Rem Jet, and I still carry my dads 36 chief special snub, it's older than me and still looks & shoots like new. Great out of the box triggers especially sa.

I've had a 629-3 ,4" for about 6 months now, with what appears to be a hogue wood finger groove mono grip. Its mechanicaly perfect, seems to shoot very well, these things are nice. My shooting so far is at 44 spc to stout 44spc, I have not made it to a magnum level yet. Its so enjoyable like this that my magnum ammo may end up moldy. I hope you have as much fun loading for, and shooting yours as much as I have. Have you considered leather yet, I have alot, but have made no decisions to date.

I have a dedicated 44 spc. in a ruger flat top , so i will be shooting magnum loads in the S&W. Maybe not full power loads but whatever shoots good. Ordered a safariland 568 paddle holster. Have one for my GP100 and really like it.

Those are nice guns..have had a couple and still have one .44 Magnum 629-5 Mountain Gun.
One of the more important issues with a S&W is grip fit. If they don't fit your hand heavy loads can be downright painful to shoot. If sharply checked like the original Target stocks, they will remove your palmprints. The web of your hand can also take a beating.
Did you buy a new one or one of the older ones?

I keep it only for one reason...and is the reason I bought it. I was so impressed by the Speer .44 Magnum 200 grain Gold Dot HP Short Barrel load I just had to find a gun to shoot them out of. I then developed a load with the no longer made Berry's plated 200 grain bullet for practice that matches the velocity.
Funny story...the gun was "used" on GunBroker or AuctionArms...when I got it it look like new. Called the Seller and he said he had only fired one cylinderfull from the gun and that was enough for him.
The SBL shoots the 200 grain Gold Dot HP made for the .44 Special at 1080 fps from a 4" barrel...it expands every time. The .44 Special version with the exact same bullet rated at 860 from a 6.5" barrel does not. Recoil is very controllable...
When you come for that visit I'll break it out....it has less than 100 rounds through it...

Any 29 iteration in a Smith is a good weapon to have. I need to work up some SBLs for my Mtn Gun!
