I'm starting to think about custom revolver #2 and I believe it will be a DA Ruger. The GP44 conversion has been floating around in my head for way too long and I believe it would be perfect for me with 4" SP barrel and the integral muzzle brake. This leaves the question of caliber, a factory 6 shot cylinder would be pretty cool in 480 Ruger but going the 5 shot route is just as appealing in a 500L. What would you choose and why? For reference I currently have a 480 Bisley and the 500 JRH will be coming home in a few months.

I've tossed this around in my fevered brain for several years. I'd love a GP480 in the great style of Hamilton Bowen!

I was already leaning heavily in the 480 direction, it seems you guys are too.

Wow... I cast the first vote without posting. Figured I'd be the only one voting for the 480 Ruger, but surprise.
If the 500 JRH or 50x1.4" I might have had more difficulty choosing.

I asked Bowen about that, he only does 500L based calibers in 50.

For a lot less money, you could just get a stock srh 480 and cut the barrel back. Wouldn't be quite as refined but if you wanted a GP, it may as well be a 500. And you don't have a 500L. Plus if you ever wanted to sell it, it may be easier to sell a GP500. That's what I'd do.

Of the two, gotta go with the 500L. If you added 44 and 454 to the list, I'd be much harder pressed for a decision! This post made me want a GP44 in 44, but once you jump up to that next notch of recoil, might as well go full bore!

Of the two choices I'd have to go 500L. But, if it were me, and I could have only one Bowen GP, my choice would be 45 Colt.

I like the 6x480 idea since it would epitomize Bowen's factory like aesthetic. The custom 500 cylinder will be much tighter fit being scratch made. A 50AE clip fed gun would be pretty cool too and that might satisfy my urge for a true .50 DA from BCA.

I've had a GP44 in .500L and a regular redhawk in .480, both with anaconda barrels.
You old timers around here remember them.
I'd do a .500L if I were to do it again. You'll never believe how light it is.
That being said I do have a .45 Colt anaconda barrel that I will have him do a 6 shot GP44 with one of these days.
Great guns!

I remember seeing that GP500, it was a mighty fine looking revolver.

might be a moot point. I don't believe Bowen can have barrels rebored to 475 or 500 anymore

He mills the SP profiles from rifled stock, you are correct about the current rebore situation.

so... I'm cornfused... what is a GP 44... is that a custom that you already have, that you are wanting to change calibers on, or did I miss Ruger releasing a 44 caliber GP???
