I think you'll be happy with the accuracy, but the velocity may leave you wanting... I load alot with those lil donuts Wish I could find more Trailboss... I got a small bottle a couple weeks ago... that was the 1st I've found in over a year... I use that in both my 45 Colt & 38 Special CAS loads... puts a lot of pressure on finding more...

Trail Boss is a great powder to ease into the 480 with, 650-700fps loads, learn the gun, the trigger, etc and work up the recoil ladder slowly. People would be well served to learn their big bore revolvers with these loads first. Instead they jump into big nasties, learn they can be hard to shoot well, develope one hell of a flinch, and end up not shooting them all that much or all that well. Just my 2 cents, Ill get off my soap box now...

That powder is a riot in my .458 Lott with 500 grain soft points! Could damnnear shoot it one-handed. I'd love to hear what velocity you get in your .480 with the powder.

It's to be a play load, so not looking for high velos.. I have slow burners for that, and more work to do with the Lee 400gr mold too. No chrono here, so won't know velocity. Do see that in 480 that as bullet weight goes up, velos listed for Trail Boss drop alarmingly ! So, I'd only use it for the lightest bullets. Will let you folks know what the target and web of my hand says when I get to shoot them. My WAG from looking at the limited data I have in print, with different bullet, would put them at 650-700 fps.. YMMV.

Then.. I've 20 nickel cases that came with Speer 275 GD's. Now empty and would be great to use with 3F BP, and Pryrodex-P ! More fun to be had ! Likely give similar velos to the Trail Boss. Maybe even cheaper ? Hmmnnn.. Zen, and the Art of Reloading. Gotta go commune with my press and manuals.

Ok, used the nickle cases, Speer, w/CCI350 primers.Used Goex FFFG. Used little yeller dipper, Lee, 1.9cc, then squashed in some more of them Missourri Bullets, coated. We'll see, later this week. Maybe the first 480's loaded with Black Powder ? Somebody had to go there...

Be interesting to see how the lubeless bullets work with black.

Trailboss is a interesting fun powder! I dont know what it is but for such a low pressure load it sure seems accurate. I shot a 383gr boolit in my .480 with 5.7gr of TB and had a one ragged hole group!

I shoot a lot of those little donuts. And yes it's accurate and easy on the hands. I have run a bunch of it through my 50's and no doubt some will be fed to my 480.

Dmize, I imagine things will get crusty faster, not using a made for, lubed for BP bullet. I don't plan to ever shoot more than the 20 loads at a time anyway. A while back when powder was at its tightest I grabbed some more BP and a lb of Pyrodex-P to have on hand. Just 'cause. We'll see !

Betcha can see them in flight ! There's a Hickok youtube video of him shooting the .44spec Bulldog where you can watch the rds arc into the steel target. To quote Ray Wylie Hubbard.."That's just Cooler than Hell !". I'll add a disclaimer thingy here now. I do not have pressure testing gear, or a chrony...follow my path at your own risk. Especially with BP.. Stay safe, and have some fun too !

What the story on the "Smashers" in the 480 ? I looked over at Missouri bullets and found a Smasher in .430 diameter but didn't see anything in .476 except a 340 gr. called the Thumper. When I fist started loading Trail Boss the general consensus was to load to bottom of a seated bullet. Not to compress the powder. Is that still the general practice?
