You are correct, Thumpers, not Smashers...for viscious critters. My charge weight from reading Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook.

Ok, just in from annoying the neibhors. The BP loads have the most soul wrenching BAYooom ! The smell ? Wow ! Nothing like it. But after only 4 shots, crunchy-ness. Accuracy pretty darn good too. The TB, as has been reported, wow ! Accurate, soft shooting. Pics sent to those that gave me cell no.. Am headin for work with a big dopy grin on. Well, right after I slush some warm soapy water thru the poor SBH..

Am still in a state of BP happiness. The 480 w/BP is like a sawed off 45/70.... I'll say, this is not a BP spec'd gun. Theres a reason cylinders were fluted.. But by gorry, she works ! I will be looking for more Trail Boss. As ole Phil says, Happy Happy Happy ! Got the T-shirt here actually, Duck Commander. Look the part with full on winter beard going on. Sent pics to Doc... LOl !

A thought. Many, more experienced than I tout the mid-speed powders for the 480. Yet I can see where my needs might be well met with a Trail Boss play load and one other of the slow burner/wide meplat type. Then a shotshell, then a rice load, then...aw'crap. A rubber buckshot crowd control load, something to un-clog drains...peace thru superior firepower.

What is a "rice load"?

In 44 spec, its 3grs of Bullseye, a walters wad, then un-cooked white rice to the top, another walters wad, crimp, seal with Elmers glue. It'll kill hornets/wasps indoors, right off the side of the Tv, or wife with no collaterall damage. Mice at close range,etc.. Watlers Wads available for loading black powder in six-guns n such. Mr Taffin is to blame here..! Shotshells have to stay outside, rice loads can come inside...Please do not mix them up.

I have to figure out what to use for a wad, for rice loads, in the 480. Am thinking ole Walter hasn't gone there yet. Milk carton plastic is first thought.

I use either the cardboard carton a 6pk of beer (bottles) comes in or, the Styrofoam boxes you get warm food, egg sammiches, egg carton/box etc. in from the deli... BigBore44

When I fist started loading Trail Boss the general consensus was to load to bottom of a seated bullet. Not to compress the powder. Is that still the general practice? Fill to the bottom of the bullet - that's what I've been doing and have had really good luck so far. Great starting load for letting your friends try out your hand canons. Tim

How do you cut them to size BB?

I sacrifice one case. Ream out primer pocket, so I can use a nail to push out stack of wads. Sharpen/bevel, ID and od of case mouth. Use it to punch out wads from whatever material.

I've done it just like Steve mentioned above. I've also belled a case mouth and with a small triangle diamond file slightly make small serrations around the mouth, drill out the primer pocket. Get a machine screw and nut. Insert screw inside case with head INSIDE, nut on outside case head. Tighten'er up, Chuck in drill and cut away. I cut/ground a slot on case/brass side to poke wads out with a wire or whatever you choose. Works for me BigBore44
