...and am presently working with Hodgdon's Universal in place of Unique. I've found that I love Universal in place of Unique. Shoots dang good, and super clean to boot! Can't use it on the really heavy stuff in .45 cal, but that's one con against several pro's.

Agreed! I try to keep a Good stash of Universal here, besides I usually can't find Unique around. My general powders are: Universal H110 Lil'Gun Varget 4064 H380 In Stock at the moment, the above and IMR 4895 IMR 4198 IMR 3035? Longshot TrailBoss 296 (H110) I load for these: 17 Remington 22 Hornet 223 22-250 243 25 20 32 20 270 30 30 308 30 06 300 Win Mag 338 Win Mag 45 70 Handguns : 32H&R / 327 10MM 375 JDJ 44 Spl/Mag 454 460 For these calibers, what powders would you guys keep on hand to keep powder choices/types to the minimum? I load for accuracy and I'm not really a velocity Junkie/Seeker, if that helps any with choices?.. Thanks BigBore44

Unique,2400,bullseye for pistols 4895,H1000,varget for rifles
That is what I try and keep at least a fresh pound of on hand, not of what I use or what I have. Boy I wish I had picked up more of the milsurp powders several years back.
I have not gone completely all cast as of yet, but getting there.
Unique,2400, and 4895. A person would have to look long and hard to find a cartridge from .22 to .500 that those three powders would not give acceptable results on game and targets.
To those of you working with universal as a replacement for unique. Is this in handgun only? I ask because I use a fair bit of unique in my CB rifle loads. Jeff

I use Universal in my 44 handguns, my Marlin 1894 25-20, 1894 44 mag Marlin Cowboys, and in my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 Guide Gun and 1895CB Cowboy.
The Guide Gun is scoped (Leupold 1-4x20) and really is one ragged hole accurate out to 100. It burns clean and meters well, and is easy on the shooter.

Off the top of my head
44 mag, I use: 8.0gr Universal under my 265gr WFNPB bullets with a LPP.
45-70 14 or 15gr Universal under my 430gr Tombstone WFNPB LRP.

Trailboss for target/plinking loads in 38spl, 44spl, and 45 Colt Red Dot reproduces Win and Rem 100+ year running standard 45 Colt factory load. HS-6 for Midrange 45 Colt Power Pistol for midrange 44spl and 44mag H110 All magnum revolver loads
CFE-223 for 222, 204 Ruger, 308 Benchmark 222 H4350 257 Roberts, 7x57, 30-06, 300 H&H, 8x57, 8x60, 416 Rigby Varget 308 Win, 9.3x62 H4831 30-06 RL22 300 Win
If I wanted to simplify things, I would currently choose CFE-223 and H4350 to cover all of my rifle needs. To simplify my revolver powders, I would choose choose Trailboss, Power Pistol, and H110 for mild, mid-range (working), and magnum loads, respectively.

Boy in handguns I could live pretty happy with just W231/HP38, Power Pistol or HS6, and 2400 or H110. A light target powder, mid range, and a seldom used but important heavy magnum powder, the actual powder is less important than the range of loads it covers.
I rifles I could probably be pretty happy with H335, H4895 and H4831. I a pinch H4895 could probably do it all for me from 223 up to 338 win mags, I especially like how it can be easily used for reduced loads making the big magnums fun to shoot.
All of the selections being old school but proven.

Handguns: 4227 Unique H110 HS6 (IN QUANTITY!) Trailboss
Rifles: RL15 (by the bucket, for my .375 H&H and .458 Lott) 8208 XBR 7828 SSC (Shot a bunch of this in my .257 Wby) H1000 Trailboss (fun in the .458 Lott- pumpkin launcher!)
I've got a bunch others but they're just individually partial-pounders from load development. During the shortage, I went on a mad tear collecting as much as I could find of the mainstay powders I use. They could shut down powder production tomorrow indefinitely, and I'd most likely have enough components on hand to last the rest of my life and a big portion of the kids' lives. Need more bullets though! That's one area where I could stock up more.
How do you all store your powder? I gutted a cheap steel Stack-On gun safe and built some oak shelves inside. All ammo, primers and powder nicely locked up away from little hands and very well-organized.

I try to keep one slow, medium, and fast pistol powder on hand at all times. I have more than that right now but I got started reloading during the hoard fest of the late 2000s and had nothing but Longshot for a year or more when I started. Good thing I liked it! A good example of the three powder rule would be Trail Boss, Longshot, and H4227 which have all been great for my needs. I use Trail Boss for ICORE/SASS/IDPA/USPSA gaming loads. Longshot can produce respectable power in 44, 45, and 480 with lighter powder charges and a pretty clean burn. H4227 doesn't give up much compared to H110 if you load heavy enough bullets and it allows for a wider range of velocity if you ever want to load down a bit. Luckily I've also got a bit of HS6, Red Dot, and Lil'Gun on hand so that should keep me busy for a while. I don't load rifle cartridges as my rifles are all chambered in pistol calibers.

That is sort of like the "Only One Gun" thing. For years loaded for handguns, rifles and shotguns. There is also the black powder guns to consider. For handguns Titegroup for target/plinking H110/296 mag loads. Black powder ffg and fffg. No more than I shoot rifles may not have to load.
