Howdy Folks, I'm sure like myself everyone here probably has a pretty wide assortment of different powders in the cabinet. I know I ended up with some powders I typically never had, before this last Shortage, but I was glad to get'em for makin smoke... Sooo,I got to wondering about how many I really need to keep on hand for the rifles and handguns I load for, and thought I'd see how y'all feel about your supply and needs? If you were limited to 3 powders for pistol, and 3 for rifle or 6 types total of your choice,, what would you choose?.? I'm not asking how many you ACTUALLY KEEP that's not my, nor Anyone else's business... I just wanted to get an idea from the veteran handloader's here who have been at it longer than I so I can see your logic behind what your choices are.. 3 pistol / 3 Rifle, or 6 anyways you choose, with a Rough number that is comfortable of each type to keep on hand...? Thank you for taking the time. BigBore44

I'm old school in a lot of respects, and it shows in the powders that I try to keep on hand. I just recently acquired some W231 from an estate sale - haven't seen any on the shelf in a couple of years. As for quantity, I keep whatever the state fire code allows.
Pistol: Unique, H110, W231 Rifle: W748, IMR-4895, IMR-4350

Pistol: Unique, 700X, 4227 Rifle: Reloader 7, 5744, 4831.
If blackpowder counts I would include it in both lists at the expense of 700X and 5744. I try to keep a good mount of powder on hand. A fridge worth of smokeless and at least 10 pounds of assorted black.

Pistol: Universal, W231/HP38, H110/W296
Rifle: Varget- It's the only one I need for rifle. Covers 22-250, 30-30, 30-06, .308, .223 WSSM, and that's just off the top of my head! However, it seems rare as hens teeth nowadays... I do also like H380 and IMR 3031, but mostly for nostalgic reasons.

Bullseye, and WST are the ones I try to keep plenty of. Try to keep some H110, 4227, AA #9, and Unique too. Not to say there aren't others on the shelf but they don't really matter....

Well, like so many others,,, I keep a fair selection of different powders. But as I shoot more & more handguns over rifles,,, I've gotten to where I keep a lot of Unique, HS-6, H110, & H4227. In rifles,,, I keep BL-C2, H4895, H4198, & H4350 for most of my stuff. I know I've selected 4 each,,, but those occupy my bench the most.

I am trying to get a handle on what I truly Need for everything I load for I would eventually like to concentrate on Just the powders that I actually use, and ones that will bridge the gap between this or that. That's why I'm curious what others here use/keep on hand... IF I ever figure this out I'd like to try and get a Gross amount of each for when times are tough(er) than now, or worse!?? I am also trying to get the primer stocks back up and hopefully keep it comfy.... With the situation how it is these days, I've actually been trying to decide if I'm better off with rearranging my long & short gun stock to the point that I could just concentrate on getting a smaller variety but, going full bore at it having Way more on hand than I could Ever Use in my lifetime....? Going that route is secure/comforting BUT BORING AS HELL!!! Thanks for sharing and reading. Keep the ideas, and supply chain Comin! BigBore44

Personally I have replaced 296/H110 with Alliant's 300-MP and am presently working with Hodgdon's Universal in place of Unique. The rifle powder selections would work also.
