Howdy y'all, I have a SS 9.5" SRH 44 mag and have given serious thought about having it cut down to about 5" similar to the Toklat Super Redhawk. I'm sure some here have had it done and wondered how you like it? Right now mine is wearing a Leupold 4x handgun scope and will be used for deer & bear this season, and probably for many more God willing. I would like to hear any pro's and con's to having it done. Those of you who'm had it cut down, did it lose much (if any) accuracy? How's the balance/feel compared to before cuttin? Do you have it scoped or not? I'd love to see pics of them if you wouldn't mind!!!! Thank you BigBore44 P.S. I'm waiting on a used "Target Grey" SRH 454 now to get to my FFL's. I have thought about maybe having this one cut, but unsure if that grey finish would be a problem for the Smith to work with or not? I actually really like the finish. Which would you choose to cut and why? Either one will still be scoped now and then depending on uses... BigBore44

You won't lose accuracy but you will gain a much more handy sixgun!

That's what I'm lookin for Exactly I love the gun but it's just an UNwieldy turd as is, HAHAHAAA... I have a couple other 44's ( 6".S&W 29-2 and a 4 5/8" SBH) but I really like these Super Redhawk's a bunch. They just fit my hand and point well for Me. I also like that they are built like Tanks and, Can handle longer bullets and stouter loads if wanted.. Just the length is not agreeing with me except off the bench. Thanks BigBore44

Thanks BigBore44 They are ugly as can be too. But I own one, and they shoot good. I have the 454 in the Target Grey and most Smiths shy away from chopping on them since the finish is rather delicate. Maybe you can swap one out, for the Bright Stainless. Ohhh you think these things are heavy and cumbersome? The S&W 500 w/ 8-3/8" barrel needs a gun bearer. Haaa Charles

I can appreciate that a 2" barrel is not for everyone... but I'm working on my 2nd Alaskan... love the revolver, but hate the looks of the longer barreled guns...
P89DC... your's is one of the best ( to my eye ) perhaps the sight base being full length on the exposed barrel makes it look more balanced???

Some folks just hate the SRH look with a barrel (as opposed to the Alaskan), I love the functional look. 4.5" length barrel for 44mag is what I like but I haven't fired off and Buffalo Bore 305gn rounds...yet.

My 1st Alaskan was in 454 Casull... the 2nd I'm buying myself for Christmas will be in 480 Ruger...
I have a Dan Wesson in 44 Magnum, that I switch barrels on now & then... it currently wears a 6"

I think you can do a lot for the looks of a SRH by replacing that big ole ugly factory front sight base with something a little more elegant.

Always have been smitten with this one: I think the fully cut down "Alaskan" version is a fine looking specimen too: Any other version of the SRC is just strikes me as ugly as sin. We're talking makes me cringe and want to puke ugly! But that's just me; YMMV.

BigBore44 On that Ruger "Target Grey" finish, A friend of mine put a stainless S&W Model 64 in his sand blasting cabinet with the appropriate places blocked off. The finish after an appropriate blast was very, very close to the Ruger finish when each was compared to another. It is my belief that is how the finish is produced.

I should probably apologize for my unfiltered opinion of the SRH. Didn't mean to be so brash or offend anyone. I'm usually a form follows function guy...but in this case I'm just utterly bewildered by the apparent absence of any involvement whatsoever of a packaging engineer in the product development. What were they thinking?
