I'd like to have my 480 cut back to right at 4.80".

CHOPPED! I had my gunsmith cut the barrel down to 5 inches and install the DX front sight base and tall blade. I need to come up with a better profile since this blade sticks up so high I disengage it from the base when drawing from the holster and it pops out clear of the base. I haven't shot it yet so no idea if I'll even need this much height. Anyone else running this setup and if so, any solutions to this problem? Seems the DX base is a great idea in that you can swap out sights, except that you can also lose a front sight inadvertently. -John Now you have me worried as I just got the same base for my SBH.

I was shooting my SRH Alaskan yesterday and really want to find another SRH to cut down. This thread pushed me over the edge and now I must go on a hunt to find a gun suitable for alteration.

I will probably cut down a .44, but I love the .45 Colt so a .454 would work for me as well. I guess the first deal I find will choose the caliber....

Welp, I dropped off my 9.5" 44 SRH to a local Smith today. It's being chopped back to 4.80" , re-crowned and original F-sight put back on. It's the first time I've used him for anything besides transfers sooo, keep your fingers crossed for me if you could?!! I hope he is capable of doing this job!!!? Seems like it when I talked to him today Before leaving it at the shop. Supposedly 3 weeks and $180 for the job. We'll see I hope it all goes well so I can use him for some other work. I have heard him say he's good with Triggers and that's what he always seems to check first on anything I have sent (transfer) to him. I brought a nib Bisley FT today so he could check the "Creepy Trigger" and he said he could stone it up nicely. If the SRH is a success, the FT will be next... Now the wait. BigBore44

Always wanted a GP44 and managed to find a 500 linebaugh on GB a couple of days ago. Really liking those cut down supers as well.

Just curious, do short barrels require a slower or faster twist? Or is it irrelevant.

The same twist is generally used, the barrel is just shortened. Yes there is some velocity lost when cutting down a barrel. But for ease of packing, I will take a short barrel.

...Yes there is some velocity lost when cutting down a barrel.... If you hold it sideways & snap it forward at the trigger break like the gang-bangers do, you can regain some of that lost velocity. Its true!

A slightly different take on a cut down super. An Alaskan with a new 500 linebaugh cylinder with a rebored Redhawk barrel:
