Great info Tank! I also enjoy revisiting the stories Dick. My 480 is a Super Redhawk & I'm still awaiting my SBH. Like y'all I have come to enjoy my 480. and I know it's a caliber to get the job done. I'd have to dig out my data to share,,, but I'm going to be powder coating my next batch of bullets to try out! Keep it all coming folks!

All this 480 talk has me pulling the Super Redhawk out of the mothballs.

Hey Tank...We'd love to see some HS-6 loads for the .480, just seems a shame that a great powder like HS-6 gets excluded, quite frankly I'm disappointed. Stop making excuses and rustle some up...I know you know people.

Aw'crap, no HS anything here. Gonna start mixing doggy-do, old gym sox, coffee maker leftovers, and...make my own boom-boom. I do have powder, just haven't tried any of the HS stuff. From data scrounged see my old favorites will do fine. Unique,2400,FFFG,IMR4227. I haven't cracked the seal on the Trail Boss yet. The Longshot a new one for me too, not opened either.

I love Longshot and HS-6 for midrange loads in the big bores.
Enough power to kill anything and a pound goes a long way.

I've used 14gr of HS6 under a 400gr WFN - it shot good.
However, I have 20lbs of 4227, so my go to load is 21gr with the same 400gr WFN.

Ok, just in from backyard testing facility. Ten grs of Unique with the Penn 335gr casts has issues. A bit of leading I understand, bore new and rough. The keyholing just not gonna work. Plinking loads need to be accurate too. Was hoping to seat over the shoulder and go lighter yet. Am wondering, in which direction did I err. More fun to be had. Will load up some more 325gr XTP's before Sunday incase I have visitors. Opinions and WA guesses welcome.

Well the Penn website states this concerning your bullet choice - "20+ BHN premium grade material it will take velocities to 1600 fps without the need for a gas check".
My guess is that you need to run these faster to prevent leading and fly straight.

I have also had good luck polishing the bores with Corbin's bore lap compound.
It takes a little effort, but so far it's worked well for me.

Properly sized bullets, no matter how hard, won't lead as long as cylinder mouths are the same, or slightly larger than barrel throat and bore. Cylinder mouths, barrel throat and bore should be like a funnel, getting slightly smaller for the bullets journey from cartridge case to muzzle.
Softer alloy bullets will bump up easier with lighter loads on ignition, taking care of their undersized starting point, if that is the problem.

Thanks for the data, hoover! Has anyone worked up any of the cast Mihec 385 grain hp's, 400 grain XTP's or Gold Dots, or 420 hardcast bullets in the .480 with HS-6? I'll use arokcrwlr's data above as a starting point...

I've got 5 different cast bullets loaded over 14.5 gr of HS-6 and 5 with 12 gr of Longshot to chrono tomorrow. Will post results.

Tueat1stlight mentioned Gold Dots, so we might as well have Speer's data sheets for the 475L and 480R added to this thread. As far as HS-6 loads, I've always heard 13-15 grains with anything from 370-420 grain bullets in the 475L should be plenty safe. I'm not sure where that'd put you charge-wise with the 480 Ruger.
