I sold my very early S&W M57 no-dash last September to help fund my Bowen Nimrod. I was happy to do so; the gun went to a good home, and it allowed me to fulfill the custom revolver dream I'd had for years. But as the months have passed, I have felt the absence of the .41 Magnum. I didn't want to buy just any .41, so I resolved to keep my eyes peeled for an interesting wheel-gun at an attractive price. Search over: S&W M657 no dash, 3". One of about 5500 made in 1986 as a limited run. Not a Lew Horton gun, but simply a limited production model. The original combat stocks have been tastefully altered: Although it looks a bit odd, the alteration makes the grips quite comfortable for a right-handed shooter. I've got a mess of Speer 210gr half-jacketed SWC's to load and some primed Starline brass ready. Likely use a mid-range load of Unique. Should be fun.

That is nice! Not a huge fan of the caliber but I do have an original model 58 that shoots very well. Yours is almost packable. At least as much as any N frame Smith could be. Its neat to find something a little less run of the mill too.

Great looking gun there. Love those short barreled N Frames.

I have a 3" 629 that is probably my most carried gun, mostly with shot for snakes, but a load of unique and a 240 SWC at 1000fps has never disappointed, and its accurate. Enjoy your new found friend,

That is nice, the .41 is a pretty useful cartridge. Enjoy.

I've looked for one of those for a long time without success. As an aside: I have a friend that has a Blackhawk 41 Mag, only handgun he owns, He didn't like to shoot it due to factory ammo and recoil. Handloaded some 210 SWCs over a Unique load that was in the 950fps range and he loves his 41 and is getting into handgun shooting. I now have to break him into the world of reloading.
I've always been a 44 guy but at this point in time, a 41 S&W like yours would be awfully hard to beat.

If I was forced to choose just one handgun & caliber for a handgun it would a 6" S&W Model 57 .41 Magnum. Load it down for plinking & load it up for 4 legged & 2 legged critters.

Had my 3" M657 41 Magnum out on the range today. After the first cylinder it was time to replace the factory combat grips with a pair of Hogues The Combat's look nice, and I'm sure they fit someone's hand, but not mine. The load was a 210gr Speer over 9gr of Unique in Starline cases. I think it worked alright. This group was shot at 10 yards off-hand, double action. This is a fun little gun to shoot, but I don't think it's changed my mind about sub-4" Magnum N-frame's.

Well, it appears my search for an interesting .41 Magnum must begin again! This one is headed to a new home, another .41 Magnum fan just had to have it Any suggestions for my next .41?

Had one just like it, first year production in fact. It went to a good home Likely won't have another 4" S&W 41 unless it's a custom mountain-gun type of gun, perhaps made on a rebored M27... now there's a thought!
