Can the barrel be re bored to the new caliber or should the barrel match the desired caliber?
can a full lug S&w barrel be contoured into a proper barrel? Or should a non full lug barrel be used?
If I'm looking for a finished barrel of 5-5.5" long how long should the S&W barrel start out?
thanks for the help.

There is a thread about this very topic on the single action forum. Don't know if it will answer all of your questions, but it is worth looking at.

Thank you, I didn't even think about a search for the topic. I'll look at it.

(K22 barrel won't fly as a .500 L) Cheaper to start with the desired caliber, if it is readily available. The full lug can be contoured to fit the Rugers. To get a 5.5" finished barrel, start looking for an 8-3/8" Smith barrel. Go to Bowen's website, Bowen Classic Arms, under the Gallery section and the Workshop section for pictures and some discussion. Bowen's book has more info. It is available electronically for $10 or $$$ for a hard copy. Tim

I've seen the Bowen pics and some on here they are really nice. I didn't realize so much of the barrel was trashed in the conversion from S&W to Ruger, I was thinking a 6.5" barrel could be used for a 5-5.5". Thanks for the Info,

STEVE... thanks for posting those pictures... when I started reading this thread... I was wondering why anyone would want to use the S&W barrel ( forgot about the top rib )... I also then didn't realize that the frame would have to be built up...
the finished product ( is the rear sight S&W also??? ) looks incredible, & well worth the work, time, & expense, as she surely looks like a million bucks... & in 480 Ruger no less ( I'm thinking my next revolver will be a .480... though I'll likely go with an Alaskan for that platform )
any caliber changes I've done, I've used TJ's Liners... they are hammer forged, & I've gotten excellent results from using them... we usually turn the liner down a little, leaving a shoulder just past the chamber, that fits to a shoulder we machine in the factory barrel, when we drill it out to fit the liner, then it's full length epoxied... I would suppose they could be silver soldered if not too long... we've had no issues, but I'm curious if there is any reason not to reline the barrel, rather than go through the expense of having a barrel re-bored to another caliber???

Yes, barrels can be re-bored, this 6" model 29 barrel was re-bored to 480 Ruger. The underlug has to be removed and the shank cut off and the barrel re-threaded. The 6" barrel finished out at 4 3/4". Notice how the barrel to frame fit on my new vaquero doesn't match. The nose of the frame needs to be welded up and reshaped. After the nose has been welded up, reshaped and drilled and tapped for the ejector rod housing And gratuitous pictures of the finished product. The original front sight blade was milled off and a slot milled in the base to accept a pinned blade Steve, that is a absolutely beautiful revolver!!!!!

Can it safely be opened to .512, for a 500L or is it too thin then? Anyone know?.

You'd need an original large frame vaquero to do a 500 Linebaugh. You may be able to do one of the low pressure 50 or 500 specials on a new vaquero

My 5.5" .500L has a rebored S&W barrel. The only deviation from the norm is that the barrel walls were too thin to tap for the ERH screw (about .100), so Jack used a Colt/OM Ruger arrangement (stud soldered to barrel). We used a 6.5", and got a 5.5" barrel out of it. You cut off the original barrel threads and rethread when using a S&W barrel on a Ruger.

Very good Aggie, that's what I was hoping to accomplish, 6.5" to a 5-5.5", I am looking at using either full size vaquero or blackhawk, so the top strap issue shouldn't be an issue with the blackhawk, I hope!!!,.............good to hear about the ERH, though because I was thinking about going that route also. Probably using Gallagher for the work, I've coresponded with him about work load and suitable donor guns.

I'm a bit late to this thread but thanks for posting that custom flat gated handful of eye-candy Smith and Wesson barreled deliciousness! I have a wayward 41 Blackhawk that I'd like to have redone in a similar fashion. DW41F.
