What is the REAL, Actual/Factual reason there is and has been a seeming blight of .22 ammo of all persuasions (s,l,lr,mag)?
I hear, like you hear, the most outlandish government conspiracy "reasons" behind it and I have to admit, I cannot contest these theories in any way, which makes my frustration even more annoying.

It's really not difficult. Supply and demand. There is no government conspiracy. Sorry to disappoint. Even among our own ranks you'll see the words "bought all I could" and "bought everything they had". There are millions of gun owners buying thousands of rounds. In some areas of the country, ammo is back on shelves within 10-20% of pre-panic prices. Other areas are still bone dry and will stay that way as long as people continue to buy and hoard every box they find.
We are doing this to our selves. No conspiracy needed.

Atomic nailed it. People are buying it up when they find it. When those folks start to run out of money(and people stop paying outlandish prices for it at the gun shows) the supply will quickly catch up. It is starting to get back to normal here, but prices are a long way from where they were 6 years ago (when BHO was first elected). I was buying bricks for like $17 then...won't see those prices again.

I have not seen a single brick of .22 at WM since Sandy Hook. Dick's had some bricks of Rem a year or so ago, but a) I won't spend one thin dime in their establishment & b) I won't even try to run that garbage through my guns.
Honestly, I haven't really been looking for any, either. I bought a brick a week for a couple years before all this happened & am sitting on 30K or so. Haven't shot much in the last couple years, mostly due to being a full time college student, but don't think I'll be shooting any rimfire steels matches until I start seeing it on the shelves again.

Hoarder! At least that's what I get called when I tell people I have a reserve. Everyone had the opportunity to stock up prior to the madness, but only some did. Have a friend that has like 200 AR Mags because every week they would buy one at the local shop. When everyone freaked about a ban they were sitting on a small fortune.

Have a friend that has like 200 AR Mags because every week they would buy one at the local shop. When everyone freaked about a ban they were sitting on a small fortune. Yep. Had a dealer tell me I was part of the problem when I told him how much I had laid back. This was last year. I told him I bought all mine in 2010 and 2011 when dealers couldn't give it away and there were specials every couple weeks. I asked him how I could have caused a shortage when I was buying it when no one else did. He just turned and ignored me. There are market forces at work that are a bit more complicated than simple supply and demand, though. Companies won't increase their supply capacity due to an uncertain economic and political climate. They aren't sure they will get their money back out of new facilities and equipment should they increase the supply. Part of this is the nature of such demand bubbles, but there is also the specter of lead bans, ammunition taxes, etc. that keep the ammo companies from doing anything other than running their existing infrastructure as hard as they can and are keeping new companies from forming to meet the demand gap. Also, some very credible sources in the gun industry have remarked at times that there have been orders given to make it as difficult as possible for imported ammo to come into the country, which keeps foreign rimfire manufacturers from filling in the gap between current demand and supply. There may not be some grand government conspiracy, but a liberty-loving, 2nd Amendment friendly smaller federal government would have made the situation more favorable for the bubble to have been a lot smaller and shorter.

I also think our consumption has changed.,.,. several years ago, bolt action rifles, semi autos with 7 round capacity was the norm... now days... AR look a likes with high capacity mags are the norm...

Cubrok is correct that it's not text book supply-demand.
I don't have a big pile stashed away, i just discovered that at times during the shortage I could make 38 about as cheap as I could buy 22, so i switched practice guns and didn't consume what I had. I was living in Denevr and by the time i left a month ago, ammo was on the sitting shelves at WM, cabelas and bass pro.

Yep - I noticed I could shoot larger calibers cheaper than what .22 was going for, so I have done more than that for many months. My kids have found it fun to shoot 9mm at plinking targets rather than .22, as well. Add in casting bullets, and it is a no brainer. However, lead isn't as easy to find anymore, either. I do look forward to a return to some kind of normal again. Stashes don't last forever. I hope that the market gets glutted again (like it has with everything else post Sandy Hook) and we see bricks below $20 each again. Maybe we will, maybe we won't, but if we get another oversupply situation and the price is right, I'll add to the stash as much as I can afford. I would recommend everyone do likewise. That will be the time to "hoard" while the average shooter is blowing his money on a new Iphone or dinner out.

According to an email received directly from CCI: "...with the demand for rimfire ammunition, it makes it hard to supply ammunition to all of our customers. His (sic) doesn’t matter if it is in the USA, Canada or Europe, ammunition is hard to find. When people stop hoarding ammuntion and start shooting what they are buying this will allow the market to return to normal."
Supply & Demand? Not in the classic sense but yes absolutely. No manufacturer can produce more than the are capable of. There have been numerous reports of manufacturers going to 3 shifts for well over a year. I hae said 1,000 times: "When people stop buying from gougers the price will come down - and it will be available again!

Agreed. Stop paying the scalper prices. Let the true hoarders choke on their stashes.

The last several reports I have seen on other forums is that gun shows still have a blight of overpriced .22 ammo. Nobody buying apparently. I hope they keep their stash for years. I know when it becomes readily available again (and it will... just be patient) I will stock up on fair priced .22LR, .22WMR, .17HM2 & .17HMR. I can't roll my own on any of those.

Dicks had, I'm guessing now, 5,000 rounds of 22 when I was there yesterday. I got my 3 box limit. Also grabbed some 9 and 45acp. Calibers I don't reload for yet.

Given that there's no way now that Congress will pass anything 2nd unfriendly, you'd like to think the hysteria should grind to a halt right about now.
