Did a bit o swapping today and came home with an old 15-3. Finish is rough as a cobb. Lockup is as tight as I have ever felt on a Smith. .001 feeler will fit in the BC gap, but .002 won't.... It may be a parts gun as the finish on the cylinder is much better than the rest and I don't recall ever noticing a Model 15 with a target hammer and trigger. Of course I never paid them much attention, so it may be common. I'll have to clean it up and see which direction to go with it.

Looks like a good candidate for a re-finish in hard chrome or black T.

Could not say, I bought it off GB a couple years back, rear sight was broke, bad finish, ugly plastic grips.... Joe loved it on first sight! Best I can remember it came from a dealer in Idaho. Ronnie

Send it off to Fords to get re-blued, and put some of Patrick Grasshorns elk stag grips on it.

The trigger felt great. I haven't taken it down yet and gave it a good going through, so I am not sure just what I have yet. I'll probably have to resort to a bronze brush in the drill press to get the rust off. I may try my hand at one of the rattle can bake on finishes from Brownells. It is a good candidate for practicing on.

Years back I traded for an old 4" barrel mod 19. Looked like it had been laying on wet carpet under a car seat. Rust pitting worse on one side than the other. Barrel, cylinder and inside mechanically clean and looked good. Shot my favorite loads like a target gun. An old friend suggested cleaning it up and doing some touch up cold blue. Then use it as a woods/carry gun that didn't have to be worried about. Took his advice and for years was a favorite carry. Funny thing about that ugly gun. It was made fun of and bad mouthed, but everyone that shot it wanted it. Has not lived with me for a while now. Was replaced with a Security Six that was just as ugly. The 19 brought more in trade than a new gun. I kept telling the guy I didn't want to let it go. Have wished often I had kept it. Shoot it and if it is a shooter enjoy it. Just don't friends and others shoot it. Even ugly can't be replaced sometimes.

Great advice we should all heed. Not every tool in our safe need be a beauty queen and there's nothing wrong with owning a hard-use gun or two that shows some real life character on the outside. I hate to see good guns not being well cared for, but once it's been uglified, regular use is a great form of redemption. All that said, if the OP wants to have that tool refinished, that too would be sweet revenge for years of neglect.

I'll take an ugly gun that shoots good over a pretty one that don't.
