Had a box from JRH waiting for me when I got home today. Base gun was a 686-1 (M) .357 MG barrel ordered from S&W, rebored by Siegrist and remarked by Harton. Stainless cylinder from my 696-2 (replaced w/ Ti), and a spare Ti cylinder from Numrich to boot. Jack put all the pieces together. Unloaded weight is 38.3 oz w/ the SS cylinder, and 35.3 w/ the Ti cylinder. This officially relieves my Ruger Talo SS 44 SPL from 44 SPL PPP duty. (Frees it up to go become a .480) .090 wall thickness left in the barrel after the rebore - plenty of strength, no extra weight. And a shot with the Ti cylinder:

That is the gun the 696 should have been. I wanted to do that with mine at one point, but changed directions. Now I have a Model 69 that fills that void.

What a nice carrying handgun. Weigand offered 4" 44 bbls for the 696 when the 696 was first introduced. Let us know how it shoots!

Looks great. I planned to do that same project when the 696 first came out, and haven't gotten around to it. I have a pair of early 686s, three .357 Mountain Gun barrels, two 696 cylinders with ejectors, and a few extra 696 hands and ejectors. I carry a 296 .44 Spl a lot and find it very pleasant to shoot with 200gr Gold Dots, but would love to be able to shoot some heavier loads up to what a 696 can handle. Do you prefer yours with the the stainless or titanium cylinder?

Any of you guys with an extra mountain gun barrel you wouldn't mind letting go, please let me know. I've got everything else but. I'm going to do mine up as a M&P on a 681 frame.

I really like the idea of the 396 cylinder. They are very reasonably priced at Numrich. Must not be big sellers. I might buy one just to put away for a future project.
Nice gun!

Once I finally get a project or two done, my extra parts will go up for sale. I'm just leery of letting them go before I know if I'll screw something up during the build! The toughest part to come by, I thought, was the 686 Mountain Gun barrel, but now that they are back in production, that should be an easy call to S&W to get some. They ran $119 each, when I got mine from the original run, as I recall.
