Nice catch. My personal 2.5 inch Python was a factory presentation, so marked, from Colt President Fred Roff to Hollywood gun/fast draw coach Rodd Redwing in early 60s.

I won't get to pick it up for a while, but pic's to follow it's blue, 6" barrel and rubber grips that need replacing. Years ago I bought a used Dillon RL 450 set up in 38/357...........I have so much 38 ammo on hand I need to burn up, between this, my smith 28 and a 3 screw BH I think I can get the job done in short order!

The first one I bought cost $400. It was a 6" blued and shot like it had radar on it. Also, had a 4". I think I payed $475 for it. Sadly both are long gone.

Dad had a 4 inch nickel. First 357 I ever shot. Was 13. He traded it, but I want one. Congrats!

I bought a Python for my mother to gift to my dad back in the early 80's. It was a 4" nickel and I think I remember paying just under $400 for it. He never fired it - it now lives in my safe. They are beautiful guns. Colt's royal blue is gorgeous.

Mr. Murbach I would very much like to hear about your three Pythons. Would especially like some pictures and shooting experiences. WELL IT IS LIKE THIS; I had 'three' Pythons over a few years and none were worth carrying home. The first would shoot groups as wide as my handspan at 25 yards with any 357Mag ammo. The same ammo would shoot into silver dollar sized groups from my S&W M19 4" and the M19 was 100 to 150fps faster with any of those loads. The 38SPL ammunition out of that Python was decrepit. My S&W M36 3" would outshoot the 6" Python at 25 yards with any factory or handloaded 38SPL ammunition we ever tested. DUMPED that Python, bought number two [ I'm dumber than I look...]. The second was not a whit better with any of the 357MAG factory test ammunition or any of my handloads, all of which would still shoot like a houseafire from my S&W sixguns. SOOOOOOOO.......shiq..........we sent number two back to COLT and had it re-barreled and re-cylindered on my dime. It was then I also asked COLT what their accuracy criterion was on their BEST pistol, the PYTHON ? Their answer stunned me; two and one half inches at 45' !!! told 'em I wanted 2 1/2" at 300' and there was dead silence on the line for quite a spell....."MY S&W 357's WILL DO THAT AT 300'".........MORE DEAD SILENCE ON THE LINE...........do the work and ship it back !! It was not a whit better with 357MAG ammunition but now we had a really smooth and fancy shooting COLT 38 wadcutter gun. Trouble is it did NOT shoot those 38wadcutters any better than my K38 and was klunky in comparison. IT went away soon thereafter. In looking back it was probably no more than luck-of-the-draw that those three turds ended up with me. My COLT 357 TROOPER shot fine, my COLF 5 1/2" NF 357 is a tackdriver, and the COLT 5 1/2" NF 38SPL shoots even better than the K38 with ANY 38 load you stuff in it. AND so it goes...

Never owned a bad Python here. Best I remember a 4" nickel and a couple of 6 inch blue guns have passed through my hands. All extraordinary shooters. Traded for the 4 inch during newbie days. After it was gone I realized that it was a first year (1955) Python. The blue guns were from the 70s or 80s. Never felt like my shooting ability was above their capability. Just last week a shooter on the range was complaining about the DA on his later model Python. I did the old 20 penny nail trick for him. He didn't pay attention to what I was doing until he tried the action. Wanted me to tell him what I did.

They must have made a few good ones. I've heard stories of Mickey Fowler wearing out the bottom of a dixie cup at 100 yards with a python, offhand. This would have been back in the 80's.
