Hey All,
Haven't been posting since the forum change, but thought some might be interested. I saw Green Top in Richmond (2 hrs away) had NV's on sale for $460, and had 3 ss 45 4 5/8" in stock, so I decided to make the drive. All of them had a slight amount of endshake, so I picked the one with the smallest b/c gap - I figure those 2 issues are the toughest to fix.
I was looking for a DIY project gun, so I immediately took it to the basement and went to work. First order of business is to take care of that awful rounded glaring front sight blade. I taped it off and went to work with the mill bastard...

The new sight picture - helps a lot, but its tough to get the blade face true.

...don't worry, more pics coming, they're uploading now...
I am looking for a working gun, so I wanted the smaller frame and fixed sights. I am not sentimental about the cowboy look, I just want function, as you will most likely notice if not already...

Close up of the new blade shape. Any tips on how to blacken or paint it?

After the Po Boy trigger job (still just a little creep), I set out to calm down that glossy finish. Got out the dremel with a scotch-brite type polishing wheel, and went at it. I am very pleased with the results...

So the next step is to shoot it! And then I may take that hammer to the belt sander and rework/lower it. Also, Belt Mountain, of course, and then maybe fire lapping. Got to measure the throats too...
Any other suggestions?

Any other suggestions? How about a stainless SBH hammer with the hammer spur sides ground flush with the rest of the hammer? If you wanted to, the gun could be sent to Robar and they can blacken the SS. It is not a coating but actually changes the color of the surface metal.

That's a great idea - I saw the pics of that special SBH hammer, and really liked it. As far as blackening, I was just thinking about the sight blade itself - but it sounds like Robar's finish would do great for that! May try nail polish as a quick fix.

Serrating the front sight might help you. JG did mine about 18 lpi I think. Don't forget the Montado hammer, the checkering is nice, its the same price (basically) as a SBH hammer, and it's also a drop in.
When you get to shooting it, you can figure out how you like the grips. My factory plastic checkered grips have been moved to a .22 and a .32. 250 grain bullets at 1K fps (NW .45 colt & Lipset .44 SPL) was not enjoyable with the checkering abrading my hand. It was downright unpleasant with a 44 flattop anniversary with 290's at 1350. (EDIT: 44 MAG flattop anniversary)

Will definitely have to see about the grips. 290 at 1350? WOW, that seems hot for the little mid-frame - none for me, thanks...

The 290 at 1350 was a .44 mag flattop anniversary.
It came with the XR3 grip frame and the same grips tho.

Did somebody say "sight mods on a NewVaq"? That looks like a prop gun from the scifi movie "Firefly"

Jim I gotta say I think that's the ugliest gun I've ever seen - but hey I'm a function over form guy too...
I also figured out a way to increase the pressure of the base pin latch spring - since I didn't want to wait for a spring kit to come. I removed the spring, put it over a nail and stretched it out to lengthen it about .25" or so, replaced it, and it's now stronger. Who knows if it will stay that way though.
Another question, about Belt Mtn pins - I know they tighten the cylinder up, and don't eject, but will they noticeably increase accuracy? Seems like on a non-linebored gun, a little sideplay would help accuracy.
And, since my gun has about .0025" endshake, .0045" b/c gap, and .0075" headspacing, I think I need a .002" rear endshake bushing. Any experience or tips on how to work that out?
Thanks,
Pete
