Seems to me that there were a few guys here talking about Scotch awhile back. Hoping someone can tell me what to do with two bottles of stuff I found while cleaning out a basement. Neither are top end brands AFAIK, but I believe each bottle is about 50+ years old - as they have the embossed warning on the back "Federal law prohibits sale or reuse...." which ended in 1965 (I think). One bottle is DeWar's White Label - unopened with tax stamp still on cap. The other says "Ambassador 12 years old". Can I drink, or serve this stuff...is it worth messing with?

Good whiskey doesn't age in the bottle. It is what it is when bottled, Real scotch drinkers only drink Single Malt. NOT BLENDS. The Dewars makes a good handgun target at 50 yds. FWIW

I know what I would do with it. go out to the range with your single action--shoot a bunch of lead. go back home, fire up a cigar and pour a glass. or I can do it for you ;-)

I would do a healthy amount of googling to make sure there's no cult demand for such a product, although it's somewhat unlikely. Once you're satisfied that it's not particularly valuable, crack a bottle open and give it a go! It might not be the best stuff in the world, but it shouldn't kill you either! I'd follow cmillard's advice to the letter!

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I knew that the age of the bottle didn't correspond with the aging of the whiskey. BTW I did a bit of googling and found that the Dewar's is 1950's based on the label. I found some place in the UK which had my same bottle for sale at 225 Pounds...which is quite a few USD's. I can't imagine they'd sell it at that price. I'll probably just set the bottle with my other stuff and impress friends and relatives when they come over.

Well I know guys that will drink anything. Personally, as I am moving on towards twilight I prefer quality over quantity. Shoot the bottles and buy a quart of 15 y.o. Glenlivet....FWIW

After my father passed in 2007, we found quite a few bottles he had squirreled away over the years (he wasn't much of a drinker). Many were quite old, with one standing out in particular. When we moved from New Hampshire to California in 1956, he was given a bottle of Crown Royal by a cousin. He kept it for 51 years, and of course it was aged before going in the bottle, so it was a minimum of 60 years old.
Gotta say, it was weak sauce. As a matter of fact, most of the old liquor in the house was noticeably weak. So my suggestion follows Lee's pretty closely, with one minor difference. Shoot the old bottles, buy some Glenlivet but in my case, add two or three drops of spring water. Note that I wrote drops, and I mean it. A splash is too much!

TBH I'm afraid to even touch Scotch. Malt, or anything closely related, horribly upsets my bowels...I get "fire-rrhea". Just not worth it to try drinking scotch. My own fave at present is Mezcal - whether the cheap Monte Alban, or the rarer Oro de Oaxacan.

OTONY, if you want to contaminate, try 1 ice cube, more than enough to water down. But make ice cubes with distilled water. :-)

Another Scotch that is worthy of mention is Cardhu. Was introduced to it by friends out west, pretty good stuff.

Man....I just can't do the lowland or Islay scotches. The peat turns me off.
My go-to is Dalmore 12 year with Balvenie 15 reserved for special occasions.
