A sincere thanks to you, Frank. You always provide complimentary comments to everyone on several forums. A testament to your personality and character I believe. Thank you for the compliment. I'm just trying to appreciate peoples efforts. I've tried a number of times to post pictures & my computer balks? So I enjoy others. Thanks.

This is another of the little Double Eagles in 45 Colt. I have a link to it's listing on the Ruger Forum in the Links section.

Didn't they only make 3 or 4 of those ? That's a real beauty.

This is most likely the most beautiful picture thread I have seen so far! And I have seen a lot I have a gut full of envy and bitterness that I will never hold any USFA masterpieces in my hand...(due to my location and USFA demise) but I congratulate all of you who were at the right time and place to pick up one (or a lot) of these beauties.

Didn't they only make 3 or 4 of those ? That's a real beauty. That's the really unfortunate situation with USPFA and USFA .. There is no way to determine exactly how many of most of there models were made. We have word of mouth from former management, but in most cases your lucky to get a close guesstimate. There were very few of the different blackpowder and conversion guns sold by USFA. There is forum talk of 50 or so but I have never heard of a definitive answer, and no way to prove it. Things I do know from former employees of USFA is that USPFA and USFA did not make any of the parts for these style guns... So they are all Italian parts and fitted/ finished by USPFA and later USFA. Of course USFA eventually, ( around 2003 - give or take) were making there own parts for the single actions , but not these, even if it says USFA on the barrel. This one above delivered in the white ( as per the label on the box) and was finished and case colored by Turnbull which I confirmed with Turnbulls and the timeframe. I am not the original owner. Turnbull put the early Colt "old armory" style finish on it.

Thanks Craig. You've got a collection that "ain't too shabby" yourself. It's outstanding as well. You know they say great minds think alike... So I don't know what our excuse is... We are just lucky I know I have been.

I do have a new blaster to show off this afternoon. It's not a USFA but it does wear elephant tooth! If I happen upon one of their cartridge conversions at a decent price I'll feel luckier than a puppy with two peters! Or I'll just build one.

So within the family a USFA Lightning rifle was purchased at auction today for a Xmas gift (we hope it gets here by then) unfired in 44/40 caliber. Now we are trying to have ammo for Xmas to fix that pesky unfired issue with the gun. Since it is not in hand for a couple of weeks we cant slug the bore to check but does anyone know what diameter barrel USFA generally used for 44/40 guns? .427" or .429"...

I will see if I can get you an answer. Btw... Out of my collection of USFA's, all are handguns. I have yet to acquire a Lightning rifle. Congratulations to you on acquiring a fine rifle!

Former managements answer:
Initially, the 44-40s had .427 barrels and the 44Sp had .429 barrels. At some time (can't remember when which doesn't answer your question) we started buying only .429 stock to use on both dual cylinder guns and single caliber guns. Never had a problem with accuracy with the 44-40s. If he's going to make his own and use lead, I'd use a .428. Or wait to slug.

Might be best to wait and slug it.

We only have one in the family, and it ain't mine, well not any more. Belongs to my youngest son now. It's a USPFA .45 Colt, full blue, one piece walnut stocks, and a 5 1/2 inch barrel.
