Took my STI Trubor .38 Super and Beretta Model 87 Target out to the range today. Really enjoyed shooting the 22 the most - I'd forgot how much fun it is to shoot a good old 22! The .38 Super load (nope, don't try this in a gun not designed for Major Power ammo!) Bullet: Montana Gold 124 gr. JHP Powder: VihtaVuori N105 10.0 Primer: Winchester Small Rifle Case: Starline .38 Super +P LOAL: 1.245 (.981 with Stoney Point) Avg. Vel.: 1358.64 fps ES: 26.77 SD: 8.94 25 yard group with the Beretta.

A 540gr bullet ? Ouch, OUCH ! You been hanging out with that Martin guy, right ? Really though, is this a just because load, or do you feel the need, and what might that be ? Curious only. Understand ya got BIg bears and BIG moose and such up there. So..

Well, my goal with my 500L is to work up an accurate 525gr load at 1100ish. From what I've read it hits like a freight train, out penetrates almost everything else handgun and with less recoil than the full house, standard 500L load of 450gr at 1300ish. Princeout was kind enough to loan me his 525gr gc LBT mould so I could do some testing. Turns out they weigh 540 cast from my wheel weights lubed with gas check. I've worked up a load. 23gr LilGun at 1150ish. I'm still getting to know the 500L. Here's 10 rounds with that load at 25yds. I think 10 rnds averaged 1143fps, have to check my notes. First shot was low right, second was high left. I settled down, concentrated on a good consistent firm grip and put the next 8 at about a 2 inch group. Then shot a flyer and called that one. Last shot was not quite back where it should have been. I think I'm off to a good start and now just need trigger time. Heck, this is bad group for Lee at 100yds! I pulled the cylinder after shooting 5, turned it over and the brass fell out. This load does not have the recoil the 450gr at 1300ish does. I need a taller front sight blade though. I did the math, called John Gallagher and have one coming. Easy with the DX base. This thing is just a blast to shoot! What hoot! I love it!

I'm going to load up some of my "Mystery Bullets" in my Winchester 73 .357 Magnum. I picked up these swaged bullets years ago in bulk and haven't seen any since (1998?) They don't look like the usual Hornady swaged bullets I've used, but the box was marked "Hornady 158 gr. LFP 3-D". The original box fell apart years ago and I'm down to my last 100 which I'll use in the Winchester (probably with Trail Boss or Titegroup). They shot great in my Rossi Puma before I gave it to my son. Anybody else ever use any?

After having the parts for 6-8 months, I finally set up the Loadmaster to run 38 special. Took forever, since I was also setting up the dies. I was a bit annoyed that I had to reset primer seating depth, so that's an added step when I go back to 9mm. Once set up, it ran like a top! I was surprised it ran so well right off the bat. Loaded 38 special, mixed/old range brass, Trail Boss from the Pro Auto Disk, pushing a 158gr SNS cast flat point. So far, this has been a sweet shooting load. It should accompany me to some competitions this year! Without the case or bullets feeders, my cycle rate was around 450 rounds per hour. Setting up the case feeder would bump that into the 600's.

Loaded 200ish more 158 gn TL lee bullets in star line brass. A gentle dose of unique at 5 grains gets me 850 fps out of a model 28-2. Easy to plink all day and still right for Monday night league work. There's a certain satisfaction to casting your own.
