Ain't Skeerd... I'll write what I think. While I can empathize with guys lured in by the look of the RH in the display case, Dan Seals told it well with his "...All that glitters IS NOT gold..." Owned the first SRH I ever saw in the early 80s. That Rube Goldberg hammer trigger configuration quickly squashed any excitement the SRH provided for me. In the years since lots of RHs have been sold, quite a few customized, and quite a few of you like them and I'm even tempted, but I'll not bite again. Now Hamilton Bowen nose bobbing of the SRH? Now that is a large frame Ruger I could add to my SRH set..

Heck for stout six (or 5) shot guns but it does NOT fit nor like my small sized hand. Even the 41 I had was painful to shoot so no Redhawks for me.

So I put a few rounds through my new Redhawk 5.5" 44. Overall, very impressed. The DA trigger is, strange. Now, I'm mostly a 1911 guy, and my other revolvers are SA, so my lack of experience with DA triggers probably is to blame. It felt likte the trigger has different stages. Like the first stage distinctly rotates the cylinder, and the second stage cocks the hammer. I think I just need to get accustomed to DA triggers.
Quick question- what do you guys think of Win white box 240gr JSP? Would you consider it a mid-range 44 load? I normally handload, but don't have components for 44 yet. Just wondering what to compare this to.
Thanks, Eric

I bought my first .44 magnum and Redhawk the day after my 21st birthday in 1981. I wanted one with scope mounts but they had none. Salesman told me Ruger could add the cuts. They cannot. The barrels are slightly different. I made up for that a few years ago and have scoped models in .41, .44 & .45. I have never done anything with that first one. It would be a good candidate for a barrel shortening...but I hesitate...it was my first one.

Thanks Hoover,
That was actually taken with a little pocket camera. The quality of the small cameras these days is amazing. That spot is a favorite and it has become sort of a tradition to snap pics there. I enjoy looking at the various pics and noting the seasonal scenery changes.
I took RJM there this past year and we hung out and shot for a while. This is smack in the heart of Elmer Keith country.
My profile pic was taken by Bob at the old trappers cabin this past summer while we were doing some long range lead slinging.
Great times.
Bob is deadly with the Freedom Arms 41 too. Cheers!

I had a Super Redhawk in the past in .454 and it never seemed to be all that accurate, and also had some occasional mis-fires. Now however I have a strong burning desire to get a double action in 44 mag, and I am just not sure the Redhawk would have big enough grips (I have large hands). The allure is the 4 or 5 inch barrel however and if I were to purchase the super Redhawk I would certainly have the barrel cut down. Based on the feedback in this thread, it sounds like it would be problematic to try and add a larger grip to the Redhawk. I find the big Hogue grip on the SRH to fit me very well. What should I do? (I know the real answer is to buy both ) Thanks, John

(I know the real answer is to buy both ) Thanks, John Pachmeyer makes the Gripper (finger grooves) for the Redhawk and the Presentation that has no finger grooves. Uncle Mikes/Butler Creek makes a finger grooved rubber grip that I hear is a little smaller than the Gripper. Nill Griffe makes some fancy wood ones. Hogue makes 2 different rubber grips in addition to the ones that come on the 4" Redhawk. The "factory" 4" Hogue and Pachmeyers are too big for my hand. I've also tried the Ruger standard wood ones, didn't really care for em. I bought some Nille Griffe wood and ended up sanding em down to fit my hand better and got rid of some "sharp" edges. So far I like them the best. The Uncle Mikes/Butler Creek grips are only 13 bucks from Numrichs. I have a set coming just to try em out. Here's what my 4" (not 4.2") 45 Colt has morphed to.This thread needs more pics anyways!

Snyd: Thanks very much! I had no idea there were so many options out there. Who did the work on that conversion? Looks like a great way to go! Is the Redhawk cylinder the same length as the SRH cylinder? Curious how the .454 fits in the Redhawk frame... Now I definitely need a Redhawk. The question is now which one do I need; the .44 Mag or the .45 Colt (for .454 conversion)? Stupid question I know... BOTH! -John

Here's a write up I did of it. www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=105441It ended up not costing me anything. If it were gonna cost anything, and if I were to do it again I'd leave it a 45 Colt. 45 Colt in a Redhawk with it's beefier cylinder is plenty. But, it is kind of cool to have a 454 Redhawk. There is a 5 inch 45 Colt RH for sale over on the Rugerforum.

Snyd...how do the Nills handle the recoil? Because of their shape and fit to my hand I can hang on to that sucker. It's pretty snappy. mag-na-port helped tame the flipTwist. But if my grip is off a bit the hard wood will hit that thumb bone and after a few 355ers at 1300 I can feel it. The Rubbers I have coming might afford a little padding. We'll see.

Thanks...I have a set on the way for my Alaskan. Just curious what you thought of them. I'll know how I like them shortly.
If I like them, I am going to sand them into a round butt configuration to make the package a little trimmer.
