I have a Ruger Sheriff's model Vaquero with the 3.75" barrel in 44SPL. I love this gun and am having fun finding good loads for it. Anyway, I had a cowboy style holster made for this gun a year or so ago which is very nice but I find myself wanting to carry this gun a lot more and the cowboy holster is kind of bulky (see pic below). So I'd like to get another holster that holds the gun closer to my body and rides a little higher so I can possibly conceal this sweet little gun. I am 6'0" 175lb so any carry rig for this gun will most likely only be used in the fall/winter. After reading some of Taffins stuff I checked out Mernickle's PS6-SA which is at the top of my list right now. I'd like to see what you guys use to carry your Sheriffs Vaquero or similar sized SA revolver. I'm not interested in cowboy rigs or anything like that, however I am interested in seeing your hunting/working and out on the town rig.

I have carried my Birdshead Vaquero in this holster a time or two. I always wear untucked Polo style shirts, and it is covered very well like that. Holster was made for me by Ray Cory at Lobogunleather.com

A holster maker I really like is Simply Rugged. Rob makes a fine holster & with the inside out straps even a S&W N frame carries pretty well. www.simplyrugged.com

I can't post a photo right now or I would. The exact holster (before it was shipped to me) can be seen in the first row at www.sixgunleather.com/gallery.html under "Threepersons for single action revolvers". I used to wear high ride pancake type holsters for 1911s and a birdshead New Vaquero, 3.75". CraigC made me a Threepersons for the Vaquero and now that's all I seem to want to carry. It's very comfortable and concealable when I must do so. It rides perfectly at my side from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night, every day. I highly recommend a Threepersons holster for everyday use. I've got one coming for the 1911 too. After carrying in a Threepersons all of the time, I couldn't imagine going back to a pancake type. The pancakes simply aren't as comfortable for me. If I must do deeper concealment then they make sense but still not as comfortable for driving, bending, lifting, riding, or even just sitting around. An important component of carry is, of course, the belt. I use a Beltman belt and couldn't be happier.

My NM Vaq Sheriff gets packed in a holster that ShortBBL from the Rugerforum made me just before he passed. It was a test piece for him, his first for this gun. He wouldn't take money, told me to field test and keep him updated. I did. Its quite similar to the holsters for short barreled revolvers sold in the Blue Press. I like it for CCW. stevemb

I'd like to see a photo of that holster if you have one, stevemb. It sounds neat with the history.

I just ordered the Mernickle holster for single actions (OWB) that you are referring to. When it arrives, I'll do a report on it, but from what I have read....it rides tight to the body and high. Michael Bane did a review of a USFA Double Eagle birdshead, and he is wearing and mentions the Mernickle in that review. I used to use a Simply Rugged, but it was too bulky for "concealed" use,IMO.

I also had a DM Bullard Bodyguard for carrying my Birdshead Ruger. It fit nicely, and conceals rather well under an untucked shirt, due to the extreme cant angle. He usually has one in stock for the "Montado", but that is exactly the same size as your Sheriff model.

Groo here Will you use a gun belt or your pants belt? I would suggest a Tommy Threeperson type as it does not dig into your side. If max CCW Your mernickle or a Simple rugged will work fine. P.S. Tuff strips make speedstrips for 44spec/mag and with the correct pouch makes a simple flat addition.

I have a Mernickle PS6-SA holster & I use it quite a lot. It's very good for concealment & has slots so it can be used butt canted backwards or forward as well as crossdraw. It carries the butt tucked well into your ribs making concealment very good even with the SA gripframe. The only drawback if it is one is you have to draw the gun in the position it's carried in or it'll bind & be hard to draw, it's almost a level 2 retention. The gun is carried tucked into your ribs & has to be drawn that way. I almost twist the gun to the right when I draw (I'm righthanded) & when I do that it's very fast. Overall I like the holster & it does ride rather high on the belt. I think it's a very secure holster & you could probably roll down a hill & not loose your gun. I can't post pictures, but it's show on Mernickle's web. www.mernickleholsters.com

The Sparks is a superior holster. I had him make it with open trigger guard, a personal preference.
