A fellow that works for me just got a Remington setup with the scope and everything in a package. I've convinced him to pay thirty bucks for a set of dies, buy the case trimmer part and let me get him some powder and bullets at the local show this weekend and teach him to reload the forty pieces of brass he's got now. The Sierra manual has a LOT of info on 270. He thinks he wants a 150 grain bullet. Is there a "go to" powder for the 270? Any info would be appreciated. Also, who is the place that sells the three packs of five bullets to try?

Also H4831SC, it's been tops in my Browning A-bolt with 130gr Game Kings, Hornady SST's and 150gr Partitions.

H4831SC was what I liked best with the one I had. Push feed Featherweight, 58 grains H4831SC, behind a 150 grain A-Frame. Max load from the Swift manual, no apparent pressure signs, very accurate. Tried H4350, not bad, liked the 4831 better. Fooled around with a couple other powders, none of which stand out at this time. That was using Norma brass, CCI primers...

Also H4831SC, it's been tops in my Browning A-bolt with 130gr Game Kings, Hornady SST's and 150gr Partitions. That is also my powder of choice for use in my Sako. I load 56 grains on top of a Fed Match primer and under a 130 grain Sierra ProHunter bullet. Way below Max, but I started low and when I got to 56 grains three shots would go into one hole at 100 yards. As I moved upward in charge weight, the groups started to open up again, so I called it good at 56 grains.

I killed a little over 160 deer with the 150 ballistic tip in my old 270 back in Highschool. With the BT and H4831, it was incredible out to 500 yards! I would have to go back and look up loads but load that BT out to the end of the mag. It will look strange for a 270 but its a tackdriver and kills like lightning.
This was regular H4831. I never had much luck with the SC versions later but I never put much effort in them either.

If he's just hunting deer, do what the guys above say. Fill 'er up with H4831 and top it with a Nosler BT. No need to mess around.

Another thing he should think about is the 140s available today. When I was shooting mine, the 140s weren't there. I'm going to start loading again for mine soon. I'm going to try the 140s and possibly a Barnes 130 that will give me the length and sectional density of the 150s with a bit more velocity. After using my buddies last week though, in all normal circumstances, any good bullet and standard velocity should do fine. In heavier game, I'd opt for the 140 Barnes or one of the heavier partitions.

Decent 130's at 3000-3100 are deadly particularly on deer that don't take much to kill. I bought my 270 while living in Midland Texas at a pawn shop. For a song I bought the 10 boxes of 130 gr Partition's, 10 boxes of 20's Western primed brass and a 2.5-10X Leupold from the same guy, dirt cheap. I am still using the same stuff and would have zero issue chasing elk or moose with it.

Killed my first 6 elk with a custom 270, built on a Mauser action & a Bliss Titus barrel, I always used the 130 gr Hornady bullet. The 270 got its reputation using 130's & the bullets were constructed to handle the velocity. It did take me 7 shots on those 6 elk...one of them in the Selway raised his head so he got another dose of lead poisoning!
