I use IMR 4831. I was going to try several different ones but my rifle shoots it so good, I never got around to it.

I like 57.9 grs H4831 over a Hornady 140 gr Interlock.

squawberryman.... On page 161 of his Trophy Hunter in Africa, Elgin Gates and Jack O'Connor are after Kudu in the Sahara. Gates has his .300 Weatherby, built on the FN Mauser by Roy Weatherby, and O'Connor has "his favorite, a .270 Model 70 Winchester with 4x scope." Gates asks O'Connor his load: "Barnes 120-grain bullets with 52 grains of No. 4064," says O'Connor. "About 3,200 feet per second."
By "No. 4064," I assume O'Connor means IMR 4064. I would guess IMR 4064 fast for the .270 Win. Notice, however, it is a light bullet. I certainly wouldn't suggest this powder for your friend's 150 grain. (I've used IMR 4064 with great results behind Hornady 150 SP in .30-06, and behind Hornady 270 SP in .375 Holland & Holland.)
For 150 grain bullet in .270, I would start with H4831 as the hub powder, and shoot for accuracy. Alliant Reloder 22 and Vihtavuori 560 might pan out. Some barrels prefer a powder on the fast side for the bullet, which I suspect may be due to individual barrel harmonics. Which suggests he not overlook IMR 4350 and Hodgdon 4350 and Accurate 4350 if a slower powder throws the occasional flier. David Bradshaw

I remember trying Jack O'Connor's load in my custom Mauser 270, this was in the late 60's & I was at a friends private range in Texas (everythings private in Texas) the first shot locked the bolt up, we had to beat it open with a stick. The primer fell out of the action after we pried the case out of the bolt face, yowee, that was one hot load, never again! Just goes to show you that a safe load in one gun might be over the top in another...it was over the top in mine. I always used either 4350 or old H4831 with my 130 gr Hornady slugs. Just figured the pressure spike from 4064 was much too fast in a 270. Dick

Mr. Bradshaw thank you. However, I like the guy not love him. What works good with the 4831 is what he'll get. 150 pound Florida deer and he wants to shoot 150's. Some people here want a 7 mag...go figger

Dick.... jigger full of 4064 trying to go down that tiny hole? Why, the powder probably thinks there's as much daylight out the back door as out the front.
Squawberryman.... sorry to twist this tale overboard. Hell, a .243 Win or 6mm Rem with Hornady 100 SP sounds plenty for florida, lest you need to ventilate palmetto on the way. David Bradshaw

I am going to try the Barnes TTSX in mine when I get through this last box of Sierra 130s. Why? Because I have shots tha can range from 50-300 yards+. Hunting Easter. To western kansas. Before anyone gives me an ear full, I don't consider hunting much past 200 yards. But I do what I do cause I line to eat the darn things. My results with a lead core bullet out of the 270 under 100 are good but sure messy. I am a 270 fan for sure but IMHO this caliber is hard on bullets and hard on game up close. So I opted for the Barnes to hang together if an up close shot presents its self. Any one got any input on this in the 270? I have a 28" barreled 243 that I am using and it is a death ray. Using hybrid 100v and this thing came to life. Yes it is probably a throat burner but no more than 5-10 rounds a year it will out last me I am sure. Jeff

Jeff, I have some 130 TSX I picked up recently to try myself. I used a 270 out in W KS last month on antelope and it did well at just a shade under 500 yards. Was using a cheap core loc bullet that day but they shoot under 1/2" in that rifle. The 130 Barnes is showing velocities in their manual of 3133-3211 fps with that bullet. Should be a very nice performing bullet. We will find out. All of my Barnes loads with other caliber a have been extremely accurate, I've been very very pleased.

We've an odd breed of "hunters" down here Mr. Bradshaw. Not that there aren't a lot of good bucks taken by men that don't say much, but the bigger hole is better mentality seems predominant. A 22-250 in the neck never spoils the meat.

I've always used the130 Sierra Spitzer Boat tail (# 1820) and H4831, and will never change. It's always worked, and I'm thick headed. Seldom use a rifle for anything anyway.
