Horn tooting again, but some time ago when I was writing for Gun World and Jan Libourel was still Editor, I did an "if I could only have one rifle" article and made the case for the M1A. I have a Super Match now that puts rounds into nice sub half inch groups when I do my part. Rack grade rifles are not usually capable of that but can be tweaked to do so. The average AR15 will be quite a bit more accurate than the average M1A.

I like my M1A way more than my AR15 (especially since I put a scope on it!) Something about steel and a walnut stock...

Justahunter, Since June, I've sold off the scope, mount & bipod....ended up with about $800 in the rifle. Not a bad deal. It's great to fun to shoot with iron sights. Bob

I've not spent much time at the 100 yard bench yet. It's not even working at 50 yards.

I think I paid $2,800 for my super match. Keeping rounds in a paper plate at 600 yards with iron sights priceless.

I must re-phrase...
It's not "even working HARD" at 50 yards"
Sorry.

The M1A is a really good rifle, especially the early ones with mostly GI parts. I've owned a few over the decades and all have been exceptionally fine rifles, you're going to love yours. Attachments:

Mine goes to the desert with me almost every time. I like it a ton more than the AR, I shoot it more than any other rifle. Accurate, and as was said earlier, easy to shoot offhand. I love it so much I bought one for both of my brothers, they say it's their favorite as well. I have an extra one I am going to give my Dad.

As a young Jarhead, I used an M-1 for a couple years, and a couple M-14's for a bit over 2 years. I always felt that the M-14 was vastly superior to the M-1. And when tuned by a good armorer, an M-14 or the commercial M-1A can be spectacular.

The M-1A aka M-14 to jarheads is a shooter. My first qualification as a 'boot' was with the M-14.
