I couldn't let it walk. I've been thinking I "needed" a .308 since I have sold off my STG 58 and AR10.... My buddy got this rifle and now it's mine. Besides, I have several thousand rounds of .308 (NATO Surplus) that needs to go down-range. I've not fired it yet, but hope to this weekend. It's in excellent condition. I did not expect to purchase one with a HD bi-pod or a scope...but heck, that's how it came. Here are a few photos... Any comments on this type would be well received. Bob My aging eyes are probably better off with a scope.

Envy would be the only comment I can come up with.

It looks great! Do you need one of those leather cheek pieces to see through the scope or does it line up pretty good for you as is?
I have always admired the M1A rifles.

Neat rifle that everyone should have at least one of. Curious as to why you call it an M1A1? A1 would mean Alternate. This looks like a standard M1A to me.

Thanks guys. I got a decent deal on the gun...the funny thing....the previous owner had installed a hi-dollar steel base, a hi-end bi-pod and a hi-dollar scope...then used aluminum/cheapo rings. Funny how we can miss stuff like that.
Doug, I'll know more tomorrow after a few rounds go down range.
Zeus, I have a BUNCH of ammo, lets put it through its paces!
nolongcolt, Thanks...I just made a mistake. I corrected the thread title.

I've never fired one that wasn't a tack driver.

I have a cousin who owns one and no amount of logic will budge him off calling it an M1A1. Just wonder how that got started.

The wood looks better in this pic than the first you posted. Must be the light. What type of mag is hanging off that gun?

It's a Thermold. They are not worth a lick...the last three rounds won't feed without individual attention. I ordered three CMI 20 round magazines last night. You can shoot the gun with the Thermold mags...but you have to fill them up to get them to work.

Groo here Got a "few" I see you have the 2 screw scope mount Good, That scope i have and it is one of the best they quit selling them as the maker could not hold the quality required and springfield rejected a large number of each shipment. [their standards are kinda high you know]. Got my Super match early and was told to " Sand bag it in , shoot federal match. use a good scope ,and if it will not put 5 in 3/4in at 100 ,stop shooting and send it back-- it is Broken!" IT DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

groo, Sounds like you have a great shooter! I don't know if mine will shoot so well but I aim to get the most out of it!
The scope, rings, base & bipod are being sold by a buddy who has an Ebay account....I hope to have a decent reduction in my investment after the auctions end this evening! So far the combined items are pushing $460... Come on bidders!!!

When the M14 was coming on, I asked one of my high power instructors, Sam Burkehalter, the difference between it and its parent M1 Garand.
"Take six of the same barrels," said Sam Burkehalter. "Chamber three in .308 and three in.30-06. One out of three will be match accurate in .30-06. Three out of three will be match accurate in .308."
The M1 and M14 and M1A are spectacular offhand rifles, supplying your swaying body with the best trigger, best balance, and best iron sights of any battle rifle in their class. The M14 and a proper clone improve on the M1 in these particulars: * Longer lived operating rod. * Superior accuracy, as indicated above. * M14 slightly lighter. David Bradshaw

Mr. Bradshaw, Thank you for you insight into the M-14. I can not wait to get it out to the range for a proper sighting in and evaluation.
