I'm not offended by this thread at all. Some serious points are being raised, and I too forsee some sort of B.S. legislation being introduced because of this incident.
I'm just wondering if this is the kickoff to a difficult year.

Actually, the facetious point I was making was that there won't be an new legislation come out of this incident, directly. It would be pointless to try to regulate the sale or manufacture of such things as pressure cookers, nails, ball bearings, backpacks, TracFones, etc. etc. However, it is somehow thought entirely appropriate to apply the same kind of regulatory thinking to ownership of firearms.
Now what we might see is a prohibition of backpacks at most events where large numbers of people gather. Other than that, I can't see anything new.
Here's the thing, though: there's been no revelation as to how and where these punks obtained their guns and ammunition. I have heard mention that they were armed with more than one handgun and at least one long arm (not particularly described). Let us hope and pray they didn't get them at a gun show...

This is correct. It was voluntary, and most everyone did stay put, locked doors, and reported anything they saw. I DO know that some people were out and about. No one was arrested for this. The "Shelter in Place" was a plea from the authoraties for cooperation to help resolve this as quick as possible, and not divert police resourses to other areas. The media were diverting enough resources as it was. People voluntarily were cooperating to get this mess resolved quickly, and quite frankly , I'm proud of them for this. It was a civilian that pinpointed the perp by being vigilant and observing a change on his property.
One friend of mine WAS dragged out of a box truck at gun point right after the MIT Cop was shot and killed. It was quickly sorted out that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and had done no harm. He commented that the cops looked as scared as he was about the whole thing.
It's doubtful that any guns were obtained legally. The younger brother.. the one that wasn't killed early on in this.. is only 19, so he isn't old enough to purchase a handgun. No reports of him even having an FID card. The older brother had a domestic violence conviction on his record which would have disqualified him as well. Regarding Ma. gun shows.... it would be a Felony in Ma. for someone to sell any firearm to another at a show or under an FA-10 face to face transfer without making sure the buyer was legally qualified to do so. That would mean any handgun FTF sale would require the buyer to show at least a Mass Class B (restricted, low capacity, no concealed carry) permit. Also a Mass. FA-10 form would have to be filed as well. No background check for this, but there is paperwork that would need to be filed with the buyer and sellers info and permit numbers on them. Again, doubtful with older brothers Domestic Violence issue, that he'd be issued a permit here.
I'd bet dollars to donuts these were black market purchases.

Keep in mind that Boston is geographically quite small. All areas concerned from Boston (Allston Brighton area and Kenmore square), Cambridge, Somerville, and Watertown are all within about a 5 mile circle. Even adding in all the neighorhoods of Boston, you're still not talking about a huge area affected by the "Shelter in Place" deal.
Considering this kid was throwing bombs/grenades out the window of a moving SUV, and engaging in mulitiple fire fights...asking the public to please stay out of the way was a good call IMO.
