Thanks Chutch, it's sorta what I figured. I think those came with Pachmayr Compacts originally? The second and third runs had the S&W ss escutcheon Hoques. It doesn't matter, it will have a set of Harretts on it soon.
no bears; I am not serious about a trade, but thanks. Rob

When ever it was it was a good day ;D. That is the best incarnation of the gun. No lock, regular cylinder retention "bump" and best of all hammer mounted firing pin!

Beautiful guns and grips. Anyone know when S&W quality started going downhill? In other words whay year did they start using mim parts and installing locks?
Thanks

the MIM parts started in the mid 19190s the lock came later. IMO the MIM hammer and trigger aren't a big deal- they are hard & smooth work well. I NOT have heard reports of them failing. The LOCK: A recent collection of folks refuting Charles Petty and his belligerent attack on ANYONE that dared to gainsay S&W for foolishly adding the lock to an otherwise great design. is posted over at Xavier Thoughts was happy to see Remington abandon their foray into the built in gun locks, there is no reason for S&W to continue to build their guns with the lock. michaelbane.blogspot.com/2009/07/exhausted.htmlxavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2007/08/s-lock.html

Thanks Robl, I did some research after I asked the question. Apparently the mim parts are good,if the process they go through is done properly. I do read xavier regularly, and agree the damn locks are a stupid idea. I don't think s&w gained any sales doing that. I see Ruger heading in the same direction and can only say it's more stupidity on their part. I really admire the mountain guns, being a poor boy I own a used Ruger Redhawk that I don't shoot often enough. The smiths look really handy though..

Is that an Ed Brown release? (I think it was them) Discontinued I believe and somewhat sought after in revolver racing circles.

I suppose,it might be one of Ed Brown's?? I can't stand it hanging out there sideways. It is coming off and headed south to a board guy. I have an old steel latch to put on it.

twbryan; You POOR thing: "Just" a Redhawk... However do you cope Redhawks are about the toughest DA .44 ever made. Changes to guns locks and such. I for one, was REALLY put off when S&W stopped pinning the barrels. It doesn't bother me so much now. The MIM I can overlook, still not happy with the worse than useless lock.

I think it may very well be the Hogue oversized release.

"All my friends have S&W's,I must make amends..." I have a few older guns and have always been impressed by the meticulous craftsmanship some have. Times change I guess. Don't use the redhawk much, strapping it on makes me walk in circles, but I just finished reading Gun Notes Vol 2 ;and intend to make up some Keith loads to try out in it. I've got a Lyman 429421 mold and a can of 2400 so I'm good to go.
