This is my S&W 1917. Those are Hogue grips. It mostly gets used for target shooting at the range and occasionally as a companion on hiking trips. I generally load a 230gr LRN over 4.5grs of Bullseye in .45AutoRim brass.

My smith 1917 was one of those Brazilian guns. Sadly no photos exist. It was a bit more rusty on the outside than inside. I cut the barrel back to four inches and put on one of those slip on ramp sights. Ugly as sin. In fact we called it old ugly. It was the fishing gun. If it went down with the boat the thought was I didn't lose much. Yet even in its pitiful state it was accurate and surprised many that shot it. It is now a prized possession. I gifted it to my number one range assistant before I retired.

I thought it was obvious: I like them as is. They are light handy accurate easy packin big bore six guns. I have chopped a few shorter but ended up under whelmed with the results. And old set of stags for stocks. One of the old wonder sights would be cool. Charles Graff may have one for sale. They fit right into a Uncle M ike's Number 2 holster...

Two dogs here's you an ideal. cut that barrel bout even with the ejector rod. Have a ball lock put in the crane. Then put a half dime or nickel for a front sight. Depends on how bad yer eyes are or poor yer are as to which one. Kinda round but the grip frame an fit some elk horn grips then a Tyler t grip. Put yer war face on hang it off yer hip and step out to the mean world.

Don't own one now. Never had one in the past either. Some things just don't flip my switch...

Go big. Short barrel and have a cylinder made for 50GI with moon clips.

How does one post a photo on this board? Is a host required or is the some way to do it direct from your computer?

Mine's longer It's a Canadian-issue S&W, converted neatly from .455 to .45 Colt. The barrel is 6.5" long, and with the old service stocks, balances nicely. I'm with Rob in thinking that the slender lines of these big revolvers benefit from lightweight barrels. Mine handles like a dream, and is a pleasure to carry afield. A heavier barrel profile would seem out of place to me, but that's what makes those sort of projects interesting and fun. And obviously you have the right man on the job.

As I have previously mentioned on this board, I own a pre-lock .45 ACP Mountain Gun. It is the stainless version with the Hogue S&W logo grips. I just ordered a Bowen lanyard ring and lanyard for it. I am very fond of this handgun, and find it to be one of my favorite pieces--using it for my bedside gun lately. When I bought it, it was stored away in a local hardware store's gun closet..they don't display their handgun inventory. For some time, I had avoided moon clip guns, but decided to try this one, and realized later what a find I had made. It is fast to reload, can shoot any bullet configuration, and I can use the Auto Rim cartridges; ordered some of them via Buffalo Bore last year. I am especially glad it does not have the internal lock, as every time I see one on a S&W, I see the manifestation of the Clinton anti-gun agenda. No photo of it---I don't have a working camera at present, and not been successful at posting pics here.
