I'll start. This is a s&w 1917 that had had the original barrel cut to 4" and the whole thing nickled when I bought it. Bought a new 3" barrel from Numerich and had it fitted by my local 'smith'. Front sight's too tall, just haven't got around to filing on it, yet.

Bill, I havent shot any of those bullets yet. But they sure look pretty and most likely just what the Dr ordered for oversize throats.

There was an article a few years back in Handguns on big bore snubbies and there was a pic of a cut back 1917 Smith with horrible Pacs on it. I bet I have looked at that picture a hundred times and thought about all the ones I let go of and how nice it would be to make a snubbie out of one. Now I am just waiting on the right one to grab and make it happen.

Have respected the 1917's since I saw a one armed old guy using one at an IDPA match some yrs back down near Youngstown Ohio. He and that 1917 were poetry in motion. He was showing up many younger two armed guys. Glad I was in another division ! stevemb

On my on 1917, I have some decisions to make. Obviously I am not going to leave it box stock. I do have a defined goal for the thing. I want good 50 yard sure plate banging accuracy out of the thing. It is a big beast of a sixgun for sure and here is the way I am leaning.....
My instinct tells me it needs a new barrel. The wartime tube is a bit generous as to its land and groove diameter. The real problem there is what length? My dear friend Mike Hutyra generously sent me some King Sight ribs in the rough that would define the barrel length at 5.5" but I am leaning towards something along the lines of a 7.5" heavier tube. The longer length will give it some "hang" to counter butt heavy feel the 1917 has. Bill Fowler sent me a double fist full of .454" diameter lead pills and while I havent yet had the opportunity to load/test them I am sure they will cure the oversize throat issue. Either that or I dont know SQUAT about sixguns! This will be a one load sixgun. Nothing too crisp, just pleasant power.
My main problem is stocks. The standard issue panels are cracked on my 1917 example and I really want something a little more handfilling. I have some thinking to do there as I almost certainly will cut the toe off the frame just because. This is going to require some custom blanks. Hutyra sent a set of Sanderson stocks to Dick Thompson to see if they could be duplicated but it does not appear that will be so easily accomplished without alot of hand work. On top of that Ole Dick has been recovering from back surgury of late. So, Im still out in the cold here. Does anyone have any suggestions???
I have looked at different sight options and my first instinct is to keep the sights along the more classic lines which points at the Clements rear but that will require some weld for the gaping trough in the top of the frame. I did locate a older Smith rear that has the tongue long enough to cover the entire trough. That one may get the nod as it would be the simplest thing to do. I could use a silhouette blade, bet Bradshaw has a couple, or even a Wiegand blade for the Bo Mar style sight picture. There is always the option of flattoping the frame as well......
Decisions decisions. The cylinder should be shortened a bit, especially since I am going to rebarrel the thing.....
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and especially RobbL. Ask the guy for a little help and you hear tires screeching outside your front door!

Milt Morrison tuned 625 Rob, those stocks are WAY nicer than the ones that were on that sixgun when you got it!
