how is recoil with heavy loads (45 colt) compared with the std. grip?

I am not that recoil-sensitive, but I don't like firing heavy loads in mine.

I've shot heavy 45 Colt in my dad's and it isn't too bad. Less to hold onto but the rounded back edge seems a tad easier on the palm. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

The truth is everyone's hands are different, you have to try one for yourself. I know its not the answer you want but most guys will tell you the Bisley grip frame is the berrys for heavy recoilers, I agree. But there are a fair number of people who find the Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk to be better for their hands. There is no short cutting you have to try one to know for sure.
That said I am sure the general sensus will be they are not great for heavy loads.

I can't stand the birdshead grip, even in 32. Check this one out, I don't think I'd enjoy it with heavy loads ;D..............Not my gun or picture, Whitworth posted it here a year or so ago. I just saved it. Tough has nothing to do with it, but if you're feeling insane squeeze off a few rounds. Notice the cheese grater stags. ( it's also in Whit's book)

have a bird's head conversion on a 4.5" stainless blackhawk done by hamilton bowen. grips are checkered walnut by eagle.
nice little piece - i wanted compact and manageable..
my standard load is a 275 hunter's supply (model #45) on top of 9.5gr unique - they extract on their own, no pressure signs.
as stated - manageable, but maybe getting to the edge of the envelope.
mind you, i have "boomers," just not this compact and with a birdshead grip.

Here is some of my birdshead. None of these were offered by Ruger in 44-40 or 32-20 Vaquero and they are Ruger frames ..

I've never fired anything hotter than a 265 WFNGC at 1,000 fps in my Montado with the birdshead grip. It's getting up there, but not bad. I actually like the birdshead better than the standard plowhandle grip. The Ruger birdshead grip is shorter than the plowhandle, but it feels fat in my hand and has enough purchase to hang onto.
My midframe Ruger is not made for the so-called "Ruger Only" loads (say, a 335 @ 1200 fps), but even so I wouldn't load this any hotter anyway. I like a Bisley gripframe for the heavier loads.

This question comes down to personal preferance. For me, they don't fit my hand well enough for heavy recoil loads. Don't get me wrong, I do like the birdshead grip, but for me, it's for 22's and 32's. Bill

You can add .44 special to that list for me. I don't load mine hot - I have .44 mags for that - and the smaller/lighter calibers are all great to me.

Hey TX Gunrunner...you wanna get rid of those grips, lemme know. They'd look nice on a Lipsey's .44 Sp Sheriff's model project I have in the works...

When I shoot my SB 44mag the square trigger guard bites my middle finger knuckle pretty good, with full power loads. My OM Birdshead Vaquero with full power loads seems to roll in my hand meaning less felt recoil & no sore knuckle. But I have to say it still kicks.
