Yep, All heart and love to stir the pot! (in a good way)
458-400 is a 1.4" 45-70 (or 475 Linebaugh) Straight cased, no neck? The necked version is Lee's 458 bonecrusher I think. Perhaps I now have them "right" in my mind. I know John does a 458 Maximum which is a 1.6" 45-70 or you can use 475 Max brass too.
I do remember there being a 1.4 458 win belted in revolvers. I believe Ross Seyfried had one and wrote about it in an old G&A issue. Been some years ago.
Thanks Todd

take a look at the little S&W 63 ( I think) Nice little J frame, swing out cylinder, all steel/stainless construction, 6 or 8 shot capacity depending on model.
Bearcats or Single six is another good choice.
Autos are ruger MK 1, 2 or the politically correct 3 or Browning buckmark.

Razor,
I would tend to agree with axe, you need 500 to get a pair.
Yes the reality is you can do about everything with the 45 Colt. Even in a SAA platform. However, the big guns can simply do the same far easier with less fuss, and far more if you want to.

John has just finished up the 8th annual seminar here in Carthage Illinois this weekend. He is doing remarkably well and is as feisty as ever. I'm really glad to see him again, and see him doing so well. Todd

I have a 38-40 built by John Linebaugh. It has had a steady diet of full power loads. Currently it is somewhere in the 600 rounds range of full tilt loads. I've not noticed any significant wear on the forcing cone as yet, however I will not contradict Dustin as he should know.
My standard load is a 200 grain Beartooth FNGC over H-110 in reformed WW 44-40 brass. Velocity is 1750 on the old Oehler 33 Recently I've been shooting a few 280 grain bullets at 1250, it is a pretty mild load.

Bowen.
As far as recoil with the Redhawk, I have a friend with a Bowen in a 4 inch Redhawk 500 Linebaugh, complete with the factory contour barrel. It is noticibly lighter in weight than it's 44 brother. I shot 450 grain Keith's at 750 fps, recoil was light and very managable. BUT, 450 grainers full house, they were not as comfortable as in a Bisley.
What to compare it too. If you've ever shot a 500L side by side with the 475L in guns with an identical Bisley setup. The 475 "feels" a bit more grumpy, more attitude. A 500L in a 4 inch Redhawk "feels" more like the 475 Bisley than the more sedate 500. Hope you follow.

The one in the lower left is mine. It is a John Linebaugh 38-40 WCF, it is a 6 shot, sorry I know it's a 5 shot thread.

Please have patience with me as this will be my first picture post.... This isn't mine, unless I can talk my friend out of it. It is Ruger Single Six in 25-20 Win, done by John Linebaugh. I have the ballistic data for it somewhere. If I recall, 75 grain Speer FP at around 1700 fps.
