This 414 Long, Supermag, Maximum, Gates etc finally came home from Jim Stroh's today. The conversion was started by our own Aggie who had sent the Maximum to Alan Harton where Alan rechambered the cylinder, rebarrelled it with a 41 caliber barrel and it was bisleyized. When I bought the gun from John it had two holes still in the top strap so I sent the gun to Jim Stroh and had him weld up the holes, send the gun to Turnbull for CCing, install his front sight along with the Belt Mountain #5 base pin and the Bowen rear sight I sent along. Jim also cleaned off the 357 Max lettering on the frame and remarked the barrel. I sent him some 414 brass and we all know that the one run of brass made reads 414 Gates due to Elgin Gate's involvement. Jim labeled the barrel as such so this is probably the only "414 Gates" labeled gun out there. For those of you not familiar with the 414, it is a 41 caliber straight walled case that is the same length as the 357 maximum. 1.6" is the standard case length for all the Long or Max cartridges and this family includes the 357, 375, 414, 445, 475 Linebaugh Long and the 500 Linebaugh Long. While there is no good reason to do so, this gun can shoot the 41 Special, 41 Mag, 41 Mag 1.4" and the 414. The Eagle grips in picture came as part of another gun swap so I just stuck them on this evening for some contrast to the regular Ruger grips. Once again, I can not recommend Alan or Jims work highly enough. It is kind of fun in that neither of these two gentlemen had ever worked with the 414 before I had Alan do the 5 shot gun for me or before I sent this one to Jim. I even sent Jim some brass and a loaded round to add to his collection. His comment was he wouldn't be surpised if he doesn't end up with one in his safe.

Nice. I like the look of be factory wood on that sixgun for some reason. Does it have a permanent home picked out yet??

Beautifully done. The 414 SuperMag is a fine round and one rare chambering. I'm sure there are only 200 or so out there. So which grips will get the permanent nod? And what loads are you planning to feed it? And while we're talking 414, anyone know who built the first one? -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Turned-out pretty sweet Robb, wearing either pair of shoes. Another .41 successfully added to the stable.

Lee I have not shot this one yet but I will probably try both my 25 grains of H110 with the 265 Oregon Trail Hardcast and the 1680 loads that I have loaded that range from 25 to 26 grains with the same bullet. When I sighted my 5 shot 414 in for elk hunting I found it really liked the 26 grains of 1680 with this bullet. The last 5 shots from 35 yards could be covered with a silver dollar and the recoil was much more pleasant than the H110 loads. If I keep this one it will get a set of horn stocks or Cary Chapman stocks but I have not made my mind up on whether it stays here or not.

What I'd like to see is a running count of the PMs you are getting about this jewel. All the 41 boys manuvering to be the front runner..

Hey Lee, you ought to get ahold of Mike Barranti. I shipped him my 5 shot FA/Ruger 414 so he could do some holster modifications. Have him come down and shoot the snot out of it. I even sent him some of the H110 rounds to use for hunting.

Kings6.... Conceptually, I think the .414 Super Mag, a.k.a. Gates, must be one of the sleeper Maximums. Think you'll find you have substantial punch in a flat shooting revolver. And, with Jim Stroh's touch, accuracy assured.
I differ on your speculation there is little reason to shoot .41 mag in your .414 Gates. Try it before you turn thumbs down.
Yesterday, 12-below ZERO in the Northeast Kingdom, out of curiosity I unlimbered my .357 Maximum and loaded it with Hornady .38 Special 125 JHP; old pre-XTP stuff. So here is this anemic little cartridge, hanging by the rim in a chamber reamed for the 1.605" Maximum, with a short 125 grain bullet.
First shot: stainless steel pot, partially obscured by snow at 200 yards. Hold about 2/3-front blade above rear sight. Bullet puffs snow just below pot.
Second shot: Aluminum spaghetti pot, a few feet away on another rock. Hold a full 2/3-front blade above pot, squeeze... POP (dull sound like a hung-over .22)----TICK!
You may just find the .41 mag to be an impressive "little" round in your .414. And an excellent cartridge for introducing your fine custom to others. David Bradshaw
