Sadly, I have never held a Freedom Arms revolver. I have a few Rugers and 1 El Dorado. Which FA would ya'll recommend for a first and probably only FA revolver to buy? Anybody know of a dealer near MS or the Dallas area that stocks FAs?

Personally? I'd get a 6" Model 83 in 41 Magnum (but that's just me). -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I like Lee's suggestion... ...but, It all depends on what your primary use will be. Hunting, plinking, etc. Are you sensitive to recoil? Need more info to give you an opinion that you might find helpful.

For packin'? A 97 hands down.

Noooooooooooooooooo... Run! Run! Run! Don't even walk to the edge of the slope. I thought I was immune. Didn't even think I needed a single one. Then an Ole Buddy found me a deal on a 252. Following that eye opening experience I found a 353, then a 555, then then same ole buddy cut me a deal on a 475. Another forum buddy cut me a deal on another 252. The regulars here know the rest of the story.. IMHO you can't go wrong with any FA. The 454 is the original FA and it is hard for me to not recommend 454. For basics I'd go 6 inch barrel with the factory action job. Adding a little fluff I'd look at ivory micarta, octagon barrels, and a 45 colt cylinder.

Number one - 97 in 45 colt with a 5 1/2 barrel. Number 2 - 83 in 454 with a 6 inch barrel.
Both in the premire edition due to the fact that it is easier to touch up the finish when damaged.
I use express sights just because they are my favorite. Your mileage may vary.

Decide what caliber you want and start there. Desired caliber really helps narrow the field. Is this a serious hunting gun or fun at the range/packin pistol. There is no wrong decision, I went with a 97, 45 Colt, Ivory Micarta, and a factory action job. I got it second hand and found the right deal. Take your time and know what you want. Be sure and have the funds ready to pounce on the deal when it surfaces, because really good deals on FA's don't last long. I can't believe this post made it this long without pictorial support.

Model 83 with a 5 1/2-inch barrel in .475 Linebaugh...... Yeah, I think this one is next for me. I'm contiplating selling 2 or 3 to fund it. Make it an octagon barrel.

6" mod 83 in 454... nobody elses comes close
I've managed to find Dan Wessons, S&W's & Rugers that shoot the smaller calibers well; but to me, the 454 (and larger) is where FA really shines.

I went with a 97 in .45 colt, 4 3/4" barrel and a round butt grip frame.
Balances perfect!

Depending on where your interest lies:
A 6" M83 in 454 with extra cylinder in 45 Colt - this is pretty much a "do everything" field gun.
A 4 1/4" M97 in 44 special with the rounded grip frame. Capable of taking big game within reason and my idea of the perfect packing pistol.
I have both! But the 44 came first!!

It depends on your tastes and goals for it.
Myself, I like the idea of the .475 with an under 6" barrel. You can always make a big gun "littler" by handloading, but you can't really make a little gun bigger by handloading.

If there was only ever to be one, I would pick my 454. I had mine rebarreled with a 10" but if it was going to be an all around, a 6 or 7.5" would be better. I like the 97s but for the mice to elephant situation, you can beat the 83 in 454. Good bullet selection and one hole groups from low powered 45 colt loads in 454 brass to the top end 454 loads. They just can't be beat. Now, for a dealer, you can always look at the dealer list from FA. When I lived in MS, I don't remember anyone that actually kept them in stock. We had a few that we ordered through but they were ordered as we wanted them. You can always go through gunbroker and have it shipped in. Where in MS are you, I can help you with accepting dealers possibly...
