I haven't owned any conversions by him, but he has worked on a couple of my guns, most recently an old S&W 32-20. He's a gentleman, honest in his work, and his prices are fair (fair as in good, not fair to middlin'). I had the opportunity to deliver my 32-20 in person while traveling through his area last Spring, so I was given the full tour of the shop and spent a decent amount of time chatting with him. My experience during my visit mirrors that of CraigC.

Here is my Stroh 32 Bisley. I picked this up from 2dawgs a few months ago. My first Stroh, but it will not be my last. Everything about this pistol is top of the line.

You cannot say that Jim is among the best. Truly he is one of the VERY best. Lots of these smiths can do the fitting and finishing. Some of them are exceptional with their lathe and mill. What sets Jim Stroh and Alan Harton apart are thier WELDING skills. Many of the smiths today who are regarded as "best" cannot weld like these 2 men.

Yep! There are dang few that will even attempt it. Harton, Stroh and Bowen are true artists in that regard. Making virtually anything possible.

Machine skills and fit and finnish is what sets the best apart, I have been all over the US and 5 times over seas for my welding skills and I am rather sure that you do not want me building your revolvers.

I have 3- revolvers that have been to Jims shop , like all who have have been there , it's an extremely tidy place for a working machine / gun repair shop. Last time I was there to pick up a S&W mod. 57 , I brought a Swedish rolling block with me just to see what and if he could or want to do work on it , he didn't , but he and I spent an hour and a half trying to take the barrel off . We were both cranking with all our strength , using 2 different vices ...never did get it off. It was just a big challenge and fun for him , great man . He has just recently got back on his feet , had a bad fall last Sept. and really messed up his knee cap , a truly wonderful man . I've got guns that have been worked on by John Gallager and Hamilton Bowen and I prize them , my all around best shooter is a .41 Blackhawk that he built for me about ten years ago.

The beauty takes your breath away!!!!!!!! WOW The true beauty is in shooting it! I just picked up a nice S&W 57-1 with an 8 3/8" barrel yesterday and since I got it for a fraction of what I consider a "normal" price, I decided it would get cut to 5", but had no idea who I would send it to. After seeing boxheads Smith, I now know exactly where its going. I think a road trip is coming up in my near future!

Not too take away from Stroh or the OP, but Alan Harton does a nice 5' N-Frame too. This was just a basic chop job though he correct somone's earlier "trigger job" and removed the jeweling that had been applied to the trigger and hammer. Alan's local guy re-CCH'd the hammer and trigger on this one. A much better match of the factory parts than Turnbull's. This also has Stroh's front sight and the restored Coke's that came off the above gun. A bootleg of the 500 5" 29's built in the 50's.

I have several Stroh guns, mostly DA S&Ws and they are universally EXCELLENT. He's also taken on projects with a couple of my "problem children," including an old steel Taurus 3-inch .44 Special with the worst trigger pull of any gun I owned. It was a gift, so I hated to get rid of it. Jim said, "Let me take a shot at it." It is now just perfect, and, amazingly -- among my not-insubstantial collection of .44 Specials -- it is among the most accurate, and definitely the most accurate snub!
