State whether using factory ammo or reloading for this revolver do you find the front sight blade a little low ? My shots are 4" higher than where I hold the sight at 6 oclock of the 3" black bull at 25 yards. This is with 850-925fps loads of RCBS 255 or RCSB 270SAA .My rear sight is all the way down. Im thinking of having it replaced with a higher partridge style blade.Trouble is its a 1963 NEw Frontier 4 3/4" barrel and there was not many of these made.I could ruin the value of this piece. I think if I go down to 200grain slugs it should drop POI but for deer ID like to have at least 250gr. Any help would be appreciated.
You will have to make a decision. Question: do you want a shooter (are you actually going to shoot this and expect to hit where you aim)? Or-r-r, do you want a safe queen?
Either sell it and buy a revolver you'll actually be able to use or have the sight altered.
Me, I would IMMEDIATELY work on the sight and shoot it.
While I was typing this I had a thought - if you don't want to permanently alter it, then raise the front sight with black epoxy. If you put a bit of epoxy on the front sight, carefully file it to fit you can always remove the epoxy with a bit of heat and return the gun to original shape.

Raise the rear sight. For adjusting iron sights you move the rear sight in the direction you want your point of impact to move. Try that before you do any modifications to the revolver.
Uh, I want to move my POI down so I would lower the rear sight not raise it. YEah I guess I could try some JB wled or epoxy and try building it up a bit. I really dont want to sell it and want to shoot it so maybe having a taller front partridge sight added on wont be that big a deal.Heck, Elmer Keith altered some of his guns and it didnt lower the value-he he !! I would think raising the velocity higher to 1000fps would only raise the POI by way of recoil? yes/no?

No your POI would drop because the bullet would spend less time in the barrel as it raises in recoil.
For a given bullet weight, lower velocities will impact higher.
For a given velocity, heavier bullets will impact higher.
If you can't solve this problem by adjusting your loads, I would send it to Jim Stroh and have him install his beautiful front sight. Of course, the barrel will have to be reblued.
Ah, so thats how it works.I like that 2 line expression,Craig. Would driving 250grain slugs at 1000fps be too harsh on my New Frontier? Does Jim Stroh have a web site so i could see this front sight?

Jim Stroh does have a website and his company name is Alpha Precision Inc. Try www.alphaprecisioninc.com. There may be a hyphen between the precision and the inc part but a google search will bring it up. Here is a picture of his sight on an old model flat top he redid for me. I think it is one of THE classiest (sp) front sights out there.
Very very nice!! OK .You know its interesting but in Elmer Keiths book Sixguns he reccomends sighting in for 50 yds and just aiming lower for closer distances!! I just cant see that though.JEff, I have printed that out by John Taffin. Will have to push up my loads alittle more.Even though my RCBS 255gr bullets are listed 255 they are really 262grain by weight. And the RCBS 270SAA are really 282gr. ISnt Oregon Trail too hard a brinnel for these loads?
