I've got to ask about recoil. How brutal are these to shoot? I find top 454 to be pretty rough. Are these way, way worse? Just depends how you load them. They can be over-the-top nasty if you load "proof-type" loads (525s at 1,500 fps or so). That said, there is no need to load them to those levels. Keep in mind that these revolvers are really light -- relatively speaking, particularly when compared to an X-frame or other large framed revolver like the stretch-framed BFR. I have found that a heavily loaded .454 is still one of the least pleasant calibers to shoot. One of my least pleasant revolvers to shoot with full-house loads is my .454 Redhawk.

I hope to try a 500 Maximum someday. Sounds like a handful

Whitworth nailed it!
The old 260gr top-end loads put out by FAs years ago for the 454 remain some of nastiest loads recoil wise Ive ever shot, fast and sharp like a slap vs a heavier slower punch of the 500.
Saying that, Ive never shot anything heavier than a 460gr bullet out of my 500max and I tend to down load it. I think the 500Max is at its best when its loaded down a bit to top-end 500Linebaugh loads, I wont be hunting anything a 460gr @1300 cant penetrate.
trailboss makes the 500max a real pussycat and a 460gr HC @ 800FPS will probably cleanly take anything in the lower 48 if the guy pulling the trigger does his part.

I've spent most of my adult life shooting big handguns, so maybe I'm not that objective when it comes to recoil. My initial loads were 40.0 of AA1680 with a 435 WFN. Haven't chrono'd it yet, but it should be going around 1,400 fps. The recoil was more than manageable and was in no way painful to shoot. I've also shot a lot of heavy 500 S&W. Two standouts being 465's @ 1,550 and 500's @ 1,500 fps. Again, not unpleasant but you know you're shooting a thumper. Now I totally agree when it comes to the 454 Casull. This 'packable' 454 Casull I did on a standard XR3-RED Blackhawk has the nastiest recoil of anything I've dropped the hammer on. Heavy 5-shot 45 Colt loads in it are OK, but the minute you start shooting 360's at 1500 fps you pay the price. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Thanks Whit. I'll have to let you try that one. We built it back in '96 and to date it's digested well over 5,000 rounds of heavy 45 Colt and 454. It needs a Bisley gripframe, but I kind of like it as is. And correction to my post above. "For most of my life" I've shot big revolvers. When I was 11, dad stuck a Model 29 in my hands and said have at it (and the loads were anything but light). -Lee www.singleactions.com

Yep, it's all his fault. I get to carry-on his 'affliction' for guns and fast cars. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Made some more cases off of 50 Alaskan Thanksgiving morning: Really nice wildcat to form. I simply lathe turned Alaskans to 1.62" and used a case trimmer to get to 1.60". No inside reaming, no neck expanding needed. The gun goes out for hard-chroming on Monday. When it returns it'll see 525 WFNs and 38.0 grains of AA1680. From what I've been told, this should give 1,300 - 1,350 fps. I'll keep you all posted. -Lee www.singleactions.com
