I had the great pleasure of meeting Col. Askins a couple of times. He was a fascinating individual. He would do to "Ride the river with". May he rest in peace.

Great article. I seriously doubt anyone will be coming by to arrest/Sue you for posting a 50+ yr old article on a message board! I've been sitting and waiting so long for Ross Seyfried or Guns & Ammo to come by for me for posting the 475 article a few months ago I've worn out a chair. ;D

Thanks for posting this Lee. Dale53, I also met Col. Askins at the '77 NRA Convention in Cincinnati. He had the most piercing set of eyes I've ever seen on any man.

Askins was definitely an interesting character and fun to read. Not unlike Skeeter, Jordan and Keith. It's too bad that their kind are so rare today. Too many are just ad-whores like Boddington.

Col Askins may have been the first one to use a .44 mag in self defense/wartime. In Unrepentant Sinner he wrote about flanking a VC sniper and shooting him through the lungs. This was circa 1957.

According to a couple of his contemporaries I knew he killed more men with a handgun than anyone else alive at that time, this was back in the mid 80's

I have read Unrepentant Sinner 4 time,THANKS to Madbo. AWESOME book by a man I wish I had met. I will also say that the first rifle I ever shot was a .22 but the first handgun I ever squeezed the boom switch on was a 44 mag SBH at the age of 12. And while a bunch of people will tell you about getting drunk leagally on thier 21st birthday,I picked up my first handgun, a 7 1/2 in 44 magnum Red Hawk, that I made deposits on for 6 months prior.

He was one of a kind. Ken Warner, former editor of the annual GUN DIGEST, tells hoe Askins said all editors were SOBs. When he sent Warner a copy of his autobiography, it was inscribed to the best of the SOBs. He was still jumping out of airplanes when he was relatively old. His auto should be a must read for handgunners.
