If he had been a trigger happy killer, he would have been a pariah among his peers.

I always like reading Colonel Askins. One because he was correctly handed and two, because he was unapologetic in his writing. I never felt he was glorifying his have had to kill men but that he was reporting it in a matter of fact manner. It happened, it was a part of the story and he told it. I have to agree with an earlier comment that if men like him didn't share their stories, we wouldn't learn as much about surviving gunfights.
I owned one of his rifles for a while. It was a model 70 that had been converted to left hand by the Kerr Sport Shop in Beverly Hills. It was chambered in 308 Norma with a gain twist barrel. I know he used it to take an enormous moose in Alaska and think it was the same 308 Norma he used on a polar bear hunt. I liked the rifle and it was a good shooter but it didn't fit me very well and I was really concerned about damage coming to it. I had it appraised by and ended up selling it through Julia Auctions last year so that some one else could enjoy having one of his rifles and a piece of history.

Glad to see this thread resurrected, as I hadn't seen it before. Thanks!

IIRC, the Joe with the lace on his panties was none other than Colonel Townsend Whelen. Seems like I remember reading an article written by him where he recommended wearing gloves while shooting the 44 Magnum. Which prompted the rebuttal by Askin's. Tom Black

Tom Black That's kind of funny because I like reading both the colonel's material. Whelen developed my favorite wildcat and big game rifle cartridge, the 400 Whelen.

Tom Black Was more than likely Hatcher who was being referenced. He received a very early 44 mag for testing in the American Rifleman.

Yes it was Hatcher. I had yet another senior moment. Thanks for correcting me. Tom
