Jeeze right hand got snot kicked out of it at the range! First shooting from a Caldwell pistol rest ,the heal of my shooting hand got tore up between the frame and butt rest! Then standing ,the right thumb where it contacts the gripframe up near grip frame screws was a bleeding mess!! Ps Boar carbon solvent removes blood from stainless, micarta and wine wood!

They are not the golden years but the Black & Blue years! Sometimes we have to rethink how we do things. What used to work has to be tweaked slightly now to work for our hands that we beat up all those years earning a living. Support the wrists with a sandbag instead of the grip with meat of the hand and don't ride the recoil shield so hard with the thumb. A couple of my big bore pistols went away because they were not fun to shoot anymore. And I'm to dumb not to shoot them if I still own them, so they had to go.

Yes, what were you shooting ? I don’t own anything larger than a .45 Colt or .44 mag, never had the need or desire, but I don’t run them as hard as I used to. Arthritis in both thumbs makes hot loads not so much fun anymore !

Off the rest was the 10” FA 2008 in 41 mag . Side note think I found a load it likes . Distance 25 yards but I only had 10 rnds ,so I dumped them all in one string. Then standing with a FA 97 in 41 that got the shooting hand thumb. Luckily I had a pair of deer skin gloves in my coat pocket, put the shooting hand one on to stop bleeding lol!

My Anaconda beat the tar out of the bone and connecting tissue of my right thumb and I now wear padded gloves to shoot anything (except my 1911's) starting with a 4 or greater. I once read (maybe here, paraphrased) "an injury is easier to prevent than the time it takes to recover from". I had to shoot left handed for months until my right thumb was up to the task!

...for what is worth, for several reasons I have developed a soft spot for protective gloves, even if I don't go beyond the .44 magnum. my only real shooting gloves are half-fingered Uncle Mike's, but I've found a decent compromise between comfort, protection and index finger sensitivity with the milsurp Nomex gloves. then, if things get challenging, rawhide gloves with the index finger cut off are not to be overlooked.
in any case, always interested in alternative solutions _

FOR ALL OF MY REVOLVER SHOOTING I SHOOT BARE HANDED. IN A GLOVES DISCUSSION THIS PAST WEEKEND AT A HANDGUNNER GATHERING IT WAS MENTIONED THAT DIFFERENT TYPE GLOVES SHOOT DIFFERENT SO IF YOU SIGHT IN USING GLOVES X AND SWITCH TO GLOVES Y YOU MAY NEED TO TWEAK YOUR SIGHT SETTING. IT WAS ALSO MENTIONED THAT PACHYMAYR AND OTHER SYNTHETIC NON-SMOOTH RUBBER TYPE GRIPS ARE LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE DIFFERENT GLOVES PROBLEMS. I MAY BE SLIGHTLY MIS-REMEMBERING THE CONVERSATION SINCE I HAVE NO IMMEDIATE PLANS TO START USING GLOVES.

I've 3 weights of leather gloves, with finger trimming where wanted. From thin deerskin ones sold for roping, working cattle, rodeo. Then some thin white gloves that come impregnated with lanolin. Last, a basic cowhide leather, with Sno-Seal melted in. These came here for bird hunting use. Now reach for them when the 480's and some of the 44's come out.

I just shop grips until I find the ones that fit right. Gloves throw a wrench in it for me. I have to practice with my light winter gloves on before the fall seasons start since they often change POi.

Dang , it's not just shootin. If I'm not paying attention to what I do to my skin anymore I will be marked for at least 2 weeks. Last one was merely shoving my arm between two tight, hard surfaces to retrieve something I had dropped. People that saw my arms wanted to report me as an elder abuse victim!

They are not the golden years but the Black & Blue years! Whoever came up with that crap needs an @$$ kicking, "golden years my left foot. Never liked gloves. Not for shooting, wearing when swinging a hammer, running a chainsaw, etc. just never felt like I had a good hold of anything. Never had much use for anything much more than a stout 44mag, I'd shoot em at least a couple of times given half a chance, now it's hot 44spl.

...a boxing glove makes the punch less lethal, but protects the boxer's hand: in the same way, no glove can improve handgun shooting performances, but it can improve the shooter's comfort, imho_

Yep, looking at the ugly purple bruises on my forearms from just doing mechanical work around the place recently. Crepey skin too.

Shoot I'm only 40 and use gloves anytime I'm shooting something with recoil. I don't take them hunting but if I'm doing load workups where multiple cylinders full will be fired I'll have padded hands. My favorite are a good set of open fingered lifting gloves. Usually those are made with a somewhat grippy material so slick micarta doesn't move around when firing and have been pretty tough over time. They aren't needed with 357s and such but stepping up into the big bores they really make a difference and have extended my shooting sessions.
