I've been fortunate after 42 years of the machinist trade, machining parts from the size of a pin head to parts that weighed over a ton when finished, plus all the mechanical work that I love to do. My hands have been used as precision tools, and far too much as blunt force instruments like using them as hammers. My hands give me no trouble at all, so far Some of you know what I'm referring too.

My career in machine shops saw my hands get similar use to others but mine are a mess. Outside of when it’s really called for I never shoot the big loads anymore, have issues tying my fishing hooks on and some days the dexterity just isn’t there anymore. Keep in mind my experience is far different from other probably in part due to my arthritis that was diagnosed when when was only 25.

My Anaconda beat the tar out of the bone and connecting tissue of my right thumb and I now wear padded gloves to shoot anything (except my 1911's) starting with a 4 or greater. I once read (maybe here, paraphrased) "an injury is easier to prevent than the time it takes to recover from". I had to shoot left handed for months until my right thumb was up to the task! If I shot very much left handed the neighbors would be in trouble…….and I don’t have any close neighbors !

I am naturally left handed but learned to shoot righty because I'm right eye dominant but I regularly train with my autos left handed so switching between hands in no biggie. This is one case where being ambidextrous is a blessing I'm thankful for on a regular basis though I wish I did not have close neighbors.

Since this has a bit of a thread drift,, (talking about shooting left handed,) I teach folks to understand that in a serious SD situation, you may only have your OFF hand available to use with your firearm. Training with each hand individually is a good skill to work on. As noted here,, injuries, or pain or whatever can cause serious issues in shooting. Being capable of using either hand can be an eye opener to many the first time they try it. I equate it to trying to wipe your butt with the hand you do not normally use. It can be messy the first few times.

I was a lefty until a severe injury and 9 surgeries made me a righty. Now I routinely fire all out Linebaugh loads right handed, but anything more than a standard 38sp in a K-frame sets the bones in my left to real pain

Off the rest was the 10” FA 2008 in 41 mag . Side note think I found a load it likes . Distance 25 yards but I only had 10 rnds ,so I dumped them all in one string. Then standing with a FA 97 in 41 that got the shooting hand thumb. Luckily I had a pair of deer skin gloves in my coat pocket, put the shooting hand one on to stop bleeding lol! My 10 inch 44 Mag Ruger had terrible recoil. I thought that strange, but that Gun was sold pronto. 10 inch barrels recoil different I thinks.

fox trapper..... while neither me nor my hands have retired, my hands went to gloves a long time ago. Shot too many bare hand magnums before handgun silhouette came along, and too much silhouette, bare handed, before greatly preferring oiled deerskin between palm and grip.
Among sports gloves, a batter’s glove.
Cut off glove fingertips, if you prefer.
Good leather receives periodic treatment of rendered hooves (neatsfoot oil0, or my heated mix of clear mineral oil & pure beeswax. More wax for water molded top grain, less wax for gloves, latigo, bags, etc. David Bradshaw
