The entire country is dealing with some really nasty weather right now as you all can attest to. Here in the NW we may have a cold snap with temps in the teens once every couple years but mostly we deal with heavy rain amounts and occasional strong winds.
A few days ago we got just a few inches of snow then temps plummeted and then it suddenly turned to sleet and we got a solid layer of ice and it ended up being about 2” of solid ice and frozen snow. It was so hard I had to put on sharp helped boots just to drive my heals through the crust just to walk across the grass! Out came the steel tipped trekking poles plus a pair of 1” dowels with short lengths of finish nails in the end just to make it to the barn to care for the critters. About an hour ago the third leg of the weather trifecta hit when it starts raining. Normally that would start the melting process but this time the rain hit the frozen ice layer so another 1/2” of ice sheath will settle onto the existing ice layers. We were warned the freezing rain would start around 2:00 pm and boy did they nail it. It had just started and I still had a full waterer to haul to the chickens but there was no way I could walk across the frozen flooded yard carrying the waterer so I had to set the container down in the ice and I tied a section of rope to the handle and slid it across the ground.
Made it inside and told the wife no going outside!
Be safe guys!

We have some sub zero temps headed our way the next few days, then warm up next week. We need some real snow.

Gosh, I cant deal with ND weather at all!!
We were down to 17 to 20 degrees at night. Spent the last 2 days chopping ice for the cattle (we dont have trough heaters down here). Thought about asking Mr. Bradshaw to come down and break all the ice in one shot. I couldn't afford that though.

It's just as dangerous INDOORS!
I've been staying in out of the low, single-digits, but got bored and started looking at another Contender barre, maybe a rechamber, maybe both and dies, mould, etc. Actually BOUGHT some primers.
If this polar vortex don't break soon, I'LL be broke!

It's relative too, I guess - depending on where you live/what you're used to, nineteen degrees can be as bad as zero. We hit zero once, but it's been single-digits mostly.
I have firewood and we're staying toasty. THAT's living.
Stay safe and stay warm!

-24 F temp and -53 F wind chill here in central ND on Saturday. Warm today, +9F. Hang in there. The days are getting longer! My day started at -26F yesterday morning in Greeley CO. Felt like I was back up in Minot or Williston. I’ve lived in the Northern Colorado front range for 28 years, now. Yesterday morning is the coldest I’ve seen it here. I’ve been in -40 in ND and northern Alberta and NW BC while fracking. No fun. Glad I’m back down here, for the most part (except for the political climate. Pun intended).

Sub zero temps here. This morning is the warmest in 4 or 5 days and it's a balmy 6 degrees. Sunday's high was zero. Thought for a couple days we were back in Wyoming except here we had inches of snow, not feet. I miss my cows and the farm but not when the weather is like this. I had things so being outside was minimal and the livestock had places to go and freeze proof waterers but, I still had to feed.
Here all I have to do is fire the outdoor wood furnace. Two times a day when it's this cold!
We have a warming trend starting today, sunny and upper 30's. That'll feel like spring!!

Minus 4 at 3AM today when I got up to relieve myself, flipped light switch on and nothing. Thought it was a bit cool. Propane heater was on, but temp. in house down to 62, turned it up. Was worried about pipes freezing, and I have 2 Cockatiels in a separate room that need the temp above 65 and 6 cats. Had to open birdroom door and try to keep cats out. Locked cats in different rooms and tried to sleep on floor by heater. Couldn't sleep worrying I'd have to go down in crawlspace and shut off the water. I have a very painful lower back due to sacroiliitis, and moving around, twisting aggravates it. Power was off 3 hours, came back on before 5AM. Didn't get much sleep and have an infusion therapy treatment this morning. Thanking God for the power back on!
