I remember cold mornings with my face buried in the front of my coat exhaling warm air into it waiting for my car heater to start working. Then later on traipsing about in the woods hunting and I didn't mind the cold as much, weird.

Send all that snow and cold weather to the Carolinas. It's been a long time since we've had a heavy snowfall. It can snow 18" here and be 70 degrees the next day. But locals here panic at a dusting of snow while they buy up all the bread and milk in the stores based on a simple weather report that might indicate "a chance" of snow.
It's ridiculous.
But seriously....send snow now!

Same crap here in East Tn. Abnormal temperatures down to about 0 deg and snow that has frozen like white milk glass. To add to the miserly power failures. This year I got a power genarator to solve that problem and I'm sure glad. I have an all electric house too. Without the generator I have a wood stove to take care of the heat. It doesn't look like the weather is going to get better soon. One more thing my heat pump froze up and ice threw the fan off balance. I had to switch it to emergency heat which I call toaster heat because it heats up those ribbons like in a toaster and sucks up your power. Good luck to you all that are having this kind of weather. John Kerry said it's global warming.

Mr. Bradshaw,
I was thinking on all of those things as I was driving home. The last 100 yards or so before my driveway is a steep down-hill. I stopped at the top, put my pickup in 2nd gear (manual trans) and idled down the hill so I wouldn't loose traction, however gravity was wanting to pull the pickup down the hill faster than it was rolling. It was a delicate dance of throttle/no-throttle/very light brake to keep the correct speed to not loose what little traction I had without going too fast to actually turn. I managed to pull it off and got back uphill in my iced-over driveway once I made the turn.

Is Kerry still a thing? That PT boat trip was awesome.

The main thing is don't lock those front wheels up, then you lose your steering. Many of times my four speed transmission saved me from going to fast on snow/ice covered roads by shifting down. I was the only person in the Post Office Winter driving test of what to do before going down such as hill as you mentioned. I'm proud to say I've never had a problem driving in those kind of conditions. I sorry if I sound arrogant.

Driving a fire truck down a hill while you’re pointed up the hill is terrifyingly fun. Even with chains on the rear duals we slid plenty, I was hoping to get the rears to bite enough to allow the front to slide over and point downhill. We stopped at a 45* angle to direction of travel, luckily we stopped because the chains broke as we slid. Some judicious reverse driving got us to the bottom and turned around. I lost a lot of respect for my officer and a crew member who was a “yes” man for the decision to attempt going up the hill. Luckily I was due to retire a few months later and vacation would allow for me to not be at work for most of it………that was Austin and Central Texas Snowmageddon 2021. Taking chances without regard for the risks is stupid.
