I have a pair of Colt 3rd gens, used, shot a little bit, not collectible or special at all.
I like the idea of a 38/357 but have shot both them exactly once since I got them. I’m a 45 guy in a SAA.
I know it wouldn’t be really cost effective to have them converted to 45, but if a good smith did it I’d know what I had when he got done.
Who would y’all recommend for a job like that?

Sir, for a Colt SA, by far the best is Alan Harton at Single Action service.
After thinking about it for a sec, you could keep your original cylinder and barrel and have Harton fit a USFA cylinder (which are a bit stouter than the originals), and make or fit replacement barrels so that if you needed, you could put them back in original condition.

In my opinion, this is the best use for .357's. Might not be cost effective, unless you want a really good .45. It certainly gets you around the persistent chamber/throat issues associated with Colt SAA's. I'm about to have Jack Huntington build me a couple custom cylindered SAA's.

If you have the coin laying around, gathering dust, I can’t see anything wrong with your plan. Alan Harton is exactly who I would use to do the work. As you alluded to, I have no use for a .357 mag with its ear splitting crack. There’s nothing it will do that a .45 Colt won’t do better IMO.

I love the 357,but use the Walkers ear plugs for all my non-suppressed shooting. My hearing is bad enough. I'd like to keep what I have left.
The 45 is more of a working gun to me. My 4-5/8" gets carried only when I know there's a larger bear on our place. Otherwise it's usually some form of 357 for daily use.
But definitely try to keep the original cylinder and barrel.

Well I have an appointment with A Harton..
He said it’s not too big of a job and he can make it happen.
Going to use the cylinders and barrels in ‘em and just grind, sand, and dremel on ‘em until they’ll pass a bigger bullet!

If Alan Harton does it, you can bet it'll be done right!!!

If Alan Harton does it, you can bet it'll be done right!!! +1 on that. The Uberti Bisley he did for me is probably the nicest custom revolver I own...super nice guy to chat with, and craftsmanship is first rate. You might look at Numrich Gun Parts online and see if you can get a take off barrel in 45...that's where I grabbed my New Frontier Buntline barrel for one of my projects, and the price was right...but if you don't mind spending some coin, I'd have Alan handle the barrel and then you don't have to worry about what condition the take-off is in. He said he sends it off and has it drilled out and re-rifled.

At this stage of my life I'm going the opposite direction. Bobby time a is building me the Ultimate Single Action .38 Special starting with a .45 Colt Flat-Top Target Model.

Why ruin a Colt? You are going to pay 50% of the cost of a new one. Just go buy one in 45 using the proceeds from the sale of one.

Even on new guns. What he'll end up with will be a much better .45 than any Colt you can run out and buy.
